Hello friends
For a day or two now, Mrs Katie Cuddle-Hugs has been making a rasping noise in her throat. We took her to the vet immediately and he looked down her throat and says that there is nothing blocked.
Up until now she has been eating and drinking, but she looks very lethargic today. Can anyone offer any advice please? She is on baytril twice a day and we are tempting her with little treats like soft banana.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Hugs

Hi Jo,
Any loss in weight? Is Mrs. Katie Cuddle-Hugs salivating more than normal? Did the vet have a look at the back molars?
When our James has dental problems, the saliva pools in his throat and it does make an upsetting sound.
Hugs from across the ocean.

I'm sorry I missed this earlier, and hope Mrs. Katie Cuddle-Hugs is doing okay. Baytril can make a pig lethargic. It is a high-powered, wide spectrum AB that can really upset the digestion. Use a probiotic to help counter the digestive issues. Limit food to hay and some pellets, no veggies. If necessary, give her a syringe of orange juice daily to keep up her C intake.
Check your humidity level where she lives. You should have at least 30% humidity for easy breathing. If it's below that, she may need some humidity added to her air. I hope she starts showing signs of improvement soon. Hugs!!!

Thank you all so much for your kind help, I it really appreciated.
So far, Katie is eating and drinking but I cannot help but notice that she is starting to get thin at the back. Yes, the vet checked everything teeth included, we have to admit he was very thorough.
I have bought some satsumas today for her and I will try her with a piece. If she doesn;t take it, I will syringe as you recommend 3piggles love and thank you for the informative links too. I will have a look at them in a mo. She is having 0.25 Baytril twice a day
As for humidity in the living room, I have to be honest I haven;t a clue, but it is quite warm in there as the radiator is on most of the time. Luckily Mrs Loly cuddle-Hugs is fine up to now, I just hope she stays healthy.
I will act on all the advice given and keep you updated. She is still gruffing Lonestarpiggies love and it sounds quieter but I don't want to build my hopes up. Thank you all for your kind concern.
Love and Hugs
JO xx

Can you put a pan of water near or on the radiator, and get some evaporation going? It may be all she needs to get the rasping out of her system.
Definitely try the probiotic. She may just not feel well enough to eat, so she doesn't bother. I don't know if you can make a fruit/veggie juice with food value, but if you can, you can syringe feed her that during the day, too. At least you will know she's getting the food value, even if she's not eating.
All digits crossed for her!!!

I certainly can 3piggles love and I am going to try her with some Yakult unless you can think of anything which may be more suitable.
I do have a blender and I will blend some fruit and syringe feed her. I put a piece of satsuma in with her last night and she left it but today she is drinking a lot and eating her dried food, which is great. She is still making her croaky noise but it isn't as loud and she looks very bridge.
I have however taken your advice and not given her greens, we have also seen her munching her hay which is a great sign.
Thank you for your kind advice love, I will carry it out.
I will keep you informed of her progress. With love and thanks

I think any probiotic she will take is better than no probiotic. Also try fennel/anise or radish, which help with digestions. Mine get a piece of fennel every day, just in case.
I don't know if there is any way to get mentholatum into the water, but that might also help open her air passages a bit, as it does for humans. Someone once said to put a tiny dab right under the pig's nostrils, but I don't know if that's really recommended. I've found pigs tend to really dislike strong scents in their faces.
Hope she is doing better today!!!

Thank you for your kind advice love and I am so pleased to say she is better. She still has that rasping noise in her throat but she has really bucked up, running around, eating and drinking well so hopefully we are going to have her for a bit longer. Mentholatum, is that the same as Vicks Rub?

Vick's Vaporub is a gel, so it won't dissolve in water, but Vick's makes a liquid that goes in the steam vaporizers. Just add a drop or two of that to the water to add a hint of menthol to the air. You don't want the air to smell of menthol, just be present enough to help open the breathing passages.
If she has an allergy, the ABs won't help that. There are OTC options, though.

Thank you my darlings, she is as right as rain now. We have let her have a little play in her pen today and made sure she is nice and warm. She has been runing around, eating and drinking, drinking rather a lot actually so we will keep an eye on it. It is lovely watching her have fun again, her little rear view with those little legs and big bum, watching her little waddle like runs is too adorable for words.
Thank you my angels for all you help, kindness and support.
Hugs

So glad she is almost back to normal. The drinking could be related to air dryness and or not eating as many moist veggies as usual. Mine drink a lot at times, and very little at other times.
