It's funny as Reggie (black) is the most interactive in terms of checking out every human in the room and seeing if she can manipulate you for snacks, but whereas the other two enjoy a little head rub when they've come to see what's going on, if you accidentally do the same to Reggie, she just flicks her head and stalks off indignantly, like 'Well, I think you know full well that's not what I had in mind!'.

A fond farewell to Bertie (pictured in grey) who has died after a thankfully brief period of ill health. This photo is so typical - the other two with their heads down eating etc, and her looking round to see what's going on and what she might be missing. Her bouncy energy and silliness will be very much missed.

I'm glad she got to live a full, happy life. I'm sure you gave her a good sendoff. So sorry for your loss <3 How are the other two doing without her? Usually they make note of the passing, and unless they're left on their own, they reform the group around those still there. I hope they're doing okay.

She and Reginald were super close, always cuddled up together. When Bertie first started flagging, Reggie was by her side constantly and all of them were really subdued (Biscuit probably only because no one was playing with her!). Then around the point where I felt like Bertie had had enough, Reggie ended the vigil and she and Biscuit went back to their usual bouncy selves.
The main issue now with them is that we'd been giving Bertie lots of little bits of extra veg, which of course the others were benefitting from too (Bertie ate better when she was with the others than if we took her out to hand feed her) so we're weaning them back to the usual service, but they'd quite like to continue with all the extras!

That sounds about right for 3 pigs, or more than two. One there are only two, as I have, lose one and the other one is all alone. I can't get that through to Vic, though I think he waffles between loving the pigs and wanting them gone. It's not really a rational thing with him. He'll make up reasons why we shouldn't get more pigs when one dies. We have the same stupid conversation every time, so I don't push it to have more than two pigs at a time. I think he thinks they're a lot of work, despite me doing 90% of the work. It's just something I chose to do because I love having guinea pigs. He, not so much. They will get weened off the extra veggies, and they probably won't even notice

Bean, I am so sorry for your loss- I feel especially bad since I believed Bertie would be okay.
Having a pet go fast is better than seeing them suffer, so I hope you can take some comfort in that.

Thanks Baz, and yes, I'm grateful that it was such a short period of illness.
We'd decided that the current lot would be our last ones, at least in this phase of piggery. The kids will be leaving home in the next couple of years (and my daughter helps tons with their care - I don't think I've cleaned them out in years) and we like the idea of going away more without having to organise pet care. But then the reality of having one left on their own for any length of time is a challenge.

I think hubby would like to not have the mess or the responsibility, but as you said, the idea of having one left on their own keeps me getting new pigs. I also love the pigs, and would really miss them. I talk to them a lot, and we have routines they've learned, like getting into the basket to go to the temp cage or back to Pigloo City. I would miss that, too. I'd just miss their antics.
When my parents' last dog died, they didn't replace her for the same reason, being free to go where they wanted, when they wanted. It's a conundrum for us, that's for sure.

Definitely. I love having the pigs, no doubt about that. Ours are near to where you come in the house so I always (well usually, sometimes they're asleep!) get a warm welcome.
I think Biscuit (who must be nearly 6 now) is going deaf. If she's out, she's as responsive as ever, but if she's hiding in a box, she's a bit slow to respond to noises that indicate food, which is most unlike her (and most other pigs, I'm sure)!

Molly lost her hearing and her site. Morty took fabulous care of her after she took a tumble down the ramp from the loft. I don't think she realized it was there. Morty was by her side, as was I, and we both made sure she knew she was loved and cared for. They do pretty well without all of their senses, especially with a little help from their friends.

Reginald isn't complaining about Biscuit being slower to come out for veg when her head's deep in a box - she just tries to snaffle extra veg before Biscuit notices the delivery! But we help Biscuit out even if Reggie doesn't! Biscuit's definitely enjoying having more of Reginald's attention than she used to have.

It's a rubbish picture, but they moved off when I came closer to get some good pictures - still, it's evidence I have pigs! Reginald definitely has her eye on me.

The pigs have been making the most of the nice weather, and have been out in the shade every day this week. Despite not getting out much so far this year, they've got straight in the swing and have been gamboling about and mowing and fertiising the lawn for me! I kept forgetting to take pictures when they were frolicking about, but took this one when I came to get them in.

Love the footsie It is great weather for the pigs. I haven't thought about taking them outside, as with all the rain, the yard work always seems to be behind schedule. I hope to get them outside before it gets too cold to do it. Glad you got yours out several times. They must be loving the fresh greens

They've done very well - even with just the two of them in quite a large run, you can see the short rectangle of grass when you move the run!
We had loads of rain at the start of the week so it's been a bit damp this week, but I hope they'll get another outing or two before it gets too cold. Hope the weather obliges for your girls too.

We have lice! To be honest, if it were just me, I'd be completely oblivious as the girls aren't at all bothered by them (no scratching or fur issues) and I can't see them. But my eagle eyes daughter spotted them on their fur. So they're being treated and everything's being cleaned thoroughly too. Bit of a pain for us, but as they're totally fine, no great shakes.

Good that she caught it before it got even worse. I'm glad the girls aren't too bothered by the lice. Lice can be miserable little buggers
