I would like to have seen some of his edits I may have saved a few of them somewhere- I'll have to look to see if I can find them in a random hard drive from way back.

Here's a very short test I'm doing to increase my skill level with the new software- a bit rough around the edges, but not too bad for a first-timer: jonathanpokay.smugmug.com/Videos/i-xJhwS76/A(still can't get the video to embed anymore, so you can just click the link)

Cool! Showed it to hubby, and he thought it was cool, too

Haha! Love it. Your daughter is a good sport.

Thanks, ladies. I appreciate it. I still have a ways to go before this skill is polished, but it's a fun journey to experiment in. Bean, I showed it to my sister-in-law and she made a similar comment, along the lines of, "It's amusing how Vicki is so tolerant of whatever nonsense you come up with." (this comment was made good-naturedly, as I get along swell with her.) I did plan to use myself in the video, but figured it would be easier to use someone else so I could keep an eye in the camera's viewfinder to measure the distance between coffee mugs. Also, it's better to feature my daughter whenever possible since she's so unavailable lately. She WAS tolerant of the whole thing, especially since I explained why it would be easier to use her in the shot instead of myself.

I find it interesting they don't think she would be happy to be part of something interesting, even if the interesting part comes after her part is done. Seeing herself in that video is probably cool to her, at least in her teenage way. I would be happy to volunteer and see the results, so it's hard for me to think of her as having to do something she's not interested in, but did it for you.

Back in the old days when she was much younger, she'd up for anything. Now that she has her own interests and friends, it's hard to get her involved, but a small project like the one I just did is reasonable- it only took about ten minutes of her time. I try not to push my luck too much. A large-scale ten-minute short film that would take a week to do would be unthinkable!

Her lovely smile totally hides any intolerance!
The day after I watched the video, I was doing something entirely different and found myself wondering 'How did he get the mugs to line up?'!

The day after I watched the video, I was doing something entirely different and found myself wondering 'How did he get the mugs to line up?'! I didn't want them to cross each other, honestly- I tried to visually line them up so they'd barely touch- if you look closely, they "fade" into each other, so the effect is not wholly convincing. Still, it gives me areas to work on, so that when I need this to really work, I know what to expect.

I wondered the same thing. Thanks for the explanation

Got a new camera, but it will be a while before I can do anything really useful with it - it's one of those newfangled 360 degree cameras! I'm in the training stage, and unfortunately it requires me to do editing on an app on my phone, which is quite awkward. Still, here's my first attempt at an effect called, "Bullet Time" It requires you to swing the camera in a circle around your head- the stick you hold the camera with is invisible to the lens, but if you look closely you can see the shadow of the stick.

Cool! Looking forward to seeing what you come up with! We were tentatively planning to return to Minnesota this fall, but just nixed the idea as my wife has no more vacation days and our daughter is going to be busy. So, still no more travel vids for a while. In a way, I'm okay with it- this new camera can do a lot, but I'm an old dog trying to learn new tricks... so my plan is to practice for a few months and by the time I get out on the road again I (hopefully) have some new skills to show off!

Well, I think a break away from everything would be great for you, sooner rather than later, but I can see the benefits in waiting until you can get more out of your new gadget!
Do you ever go away on your own, to visit friends in different parts of the country for example?

Well, I think a break away from everything would be great for you, sooner rather than later, but I can see the benefits in waiting until you can get more out of your new gadget! Do you ever go away on your own, to visit friends in different parts of the country for example? Part of me is glad to have the time to perfect the craft- there are some incredible tricks this camera is capable of, and I want to be better than my initial effort to clone my daughter, for example. I haven't traveled on my own since the late 90's. To do what I do seems a bit self-serving if I spend all my time taking selfies and shots of just me walking around. If I put my other family members in it, it has more value to the rest of the family. I have a buddy in Indiana I've mentioned before that I try to visit whenever I can, but lately he's got his dance card punched out traveling to Canada. We are supposed to get together so I can get footage of him mountain biking, but he hasn't locked in a date yet. My schedule is flexible, but he's a free spirit and his need to wander is bit greater than his need to see friends. He's still a great friend, though. Don't let my previous statement make it sound like an insult. I've had my world expanded tenfold from hanging out with him. I would never have seen Montana in the early 90's if not for him.

I don't think there's anything wrong with having a bit of time that's self-serving every now and then! But it can be more fun to share things with other people, whether it's family or friends.
Sounds like you're in for a good time when you can meet up with your friend in Indiana - it's great he has his life set up so he can do so much of what he loves.

It's easy when you have no wife or kids to worry about. He's also a fireman, so it's 24 hours on call and 48 hours off call- giving him plenty of free time. 25 years ago he wanted to go into business and wouldn't work a job that paid anything less than 100 grand a year... until he realized how much free time being a fireman would give him. He never looked back.

That's a cool camera. You'll get the hang of it, then you can take some great pics of the family on vacation. I agree with Bean about it being okay to do some self-serving now and then. It's not as if that's all you ever do. Ah, yes, you're at that point with Vicki when she'll probably be busy outside the house more than with you and your wife. She'll be off on her own before you know it, either college or a job, and even if she still lives at home, you won't see her much compared to when she was little. I remember those days, but everyone who wasn't at home was hanging out at our house. Believe it or not, the favorite snack of everyone in daughter's group was carrot sticks and ranch dressing I always had plenty on hand

It's not as if that's all you ever do. I got outside today and tried to do a trick shot- I was only partially successful; one of the issues is the app that you edit the shots in keeps crashing. I loaded a desktop app to use instead, but that version lacks 90% of the bells & whistles the phone app has. (It also crashes frequently!) Still, I'll learn the quirks and then deal with the hassles as they come. It won't be perfect, but that's how it goes. It does get irritating that the online community has hundreds of videos that are impressive, and they want people to upload more content for contests. I stay away from all that- after people are traveling to beaches and other exotic locations, my backyard experiments are no going to set that place on fire anytime soon. My plan is to spice up my regular vids with some fancy camerawork, not shoot a single 30 second vid in some location and nothing else.
