Incredible place. So bleak, yet so full of life and interesting sites. Excellent spectator view through your video

I'm starting a separate folder on my SmugMug account and including that video as extra examples of my work if places I apply to request it. They all get my demo, but some want other samples so the Petrified Forest goes into the "must see" list. (The Gettysburg video is also on the list.)

Love the scenery <3 Is there any problem with posting your wife and daughter's photos without their permission? If an employer hires you, do the employer own those images? I really don't know. I just thought about it, because I was thinking you should put all this on a YouTube channel, or someplace potential employers would see it, but that's put your wife and daughter out there, too. Once the images are copied, they're out there forever. However you deal with the image issue, if there even is one, I still think you should submit your portfolio with your resume' so employers can see what you can do.

I'm not sure I understand the question. If an employer hires me based on my Arizona video, they do not automatically gain rights to work I did before I was hired. If they want to use images I've shot, they need to pay me and anything of my wife and daughter are not for sale. Landscapes are fair game.
I can't stop anyone from copying anything, but if they do use it for monetary gain and I find out about it, I can take them to court.
That answered my question. I've known people who copyrighted their work so no one could use it. I didn't know what that industry norm was on taking other people's work.

I don't think I mentioned it, but the weekend before my operation I went with my wife on a local hike with a group of senior citizens. (Long story short, my wife joined Meetup.com and asked me to join as an effort for us to do some kind of bonding activity)
The hike kicked my butt, as everyone was power-walking through three and a half hours of almost nonstop uphill hiking! For a bunch of people in their 60's & 70's, they gave a good account of themselves. I feel shamed, but then again I had a hernia and was out of shape these past three years anyway.
The point is, I managed to cobble together a short vid of the hike. Although it was a bit rushed and I didn't have enough footage, I made it work well enough.
Looks like a lovely walk and I'm glad to hear it was before your surgery and not what you've been up to this week! I think you did very well to do all that filming while walking on uneven ground - I usually stop to take pictures when there are exposed tree roots around!
It reminds me of this summer, we did a couple of walking holidays and my husband and I were constantly chasing our teenagers up hills - they just never seemed to slow down! Of course then we could think 'Ah well, they're young and we're not so much!' but it's just practise isn't it? Hiking for 3 1/2 hours is a great workout, even if there were people faster than you!
Do you think you'll do something like that together again, when you've recovered from the surgery?

I would have loved to stop and take more pictures, so I'd have more shots to show in the vid- but everyone just practically ran through the forests, so I didn't have time for much. Luckily, I was using the action-cam, so this permitted me to get shots while constantly on the move. My wife always fell behind, so that explains why you sometimes only see just me in the shots. If you watch the vid on a large enough screen, you might glimpse my wife way in the background.
I should think that with enough practice, age shouldn't matter if your legs are up to it! I swear, one woman looked like she was in her late 80's and she still managed to keep up with the leader!
I wouldn't mind doing more, but I would really prefer a shorter hike with more time to enjoy the scenery. I think this crowd was there for the exercise and not the views.
Really nice place to hike, but I totally understand you wanting more time to look around, and less time trying to break time records. I can power walk about a mile, which is the circuit of my neighborhood, so that works well for me. Some of the people slow walk all the way to the cemetery, which is about 2 miles round trip. I can't do that, even slow walking. I was surprised you were with such a fast-paced hiking group, and you really love to do your vids, get the best shots, etc. I hope, once your hernia heals, you can find a group that's more your speed, and you'll be able to stop for some great shots, and not get too far behind to catch up. The fresh air and exercise are really good for you, just not when you can't keep up the pace.

I'm all for taking a bit of time to soak up the scenery too. The problem when we're walking as a family, is that the kids stop to do that, and then are ready to move on by the time we've caught up! But we did manage to compromise. If it was just my husband and me, we'd have definitely added about 20% onto the time taken though.
Waiting for my sister on the finish line of a local marathon showed me that age alone isn't a barrier to being uber fit - there were many people in their 70s and definitely some in their 80s. Impressive, but I've no interest in matching them!
It's really more about the life you've led up to that point. If you always played tennis, hiked, swam, etc., you just keep doing it. It only changes if you have to stop doing it for a while. I'm a bit old to take up any punishing exercise, but I would still try kayaking, if my daughter ever gets the kayak. She said she'd kayak with me, and we'll split the cost. Maybe next summer Give me some upper body exercise while sitting down. Win/win situation

I was surprised at the pace set by the group. Since it's designed as a meetup facilitation, I thought there would be more socializing and stopping to admire the view. Still, most of the people knew each other already so it makes sense that they'll go at the pace they are used to.
It's nice to make a bit of effort to welcome newcomers though, rather than it being a game of 'Chase me!'. Unlike the kids, and probably the experienced hikers on your walk, my husband and I found when we were hiking uphill, our conversation would naturally tail off as we concentrated on using our lungs to take in oxygen!
Hope you get to try the kayaking, 3piggles, it sounds like fun!
I agree. It's hard to meet people, if they never stop moving at a pace you can't match. Maybe the idea is to only attract people who can keep up?
