That salad sounds lovely Piggles sweetie, I love zucchini and used to stuff them with minced beef and onions and have them with cheese sauce. I think it is lovely how we have different words for things and are able to tell each other. When I think of a certain things I always think of it in both names.

I think you're right about there becoming more of a common language, and less specializing from country to country. I was reading a post on Facebook about how we mispronounce words. The writer was saying valet is pronounced val-ett, not val-ay. So I googled it, and it seems enough Americans misprounce val-ay, that there became an accepted American pronunciation of val-ett. Not with anyone I know. It's pronounced val-ay, and to accept val-ett is to dumb down the language, again, so those who can't speak it don't feel stupid. Buffet is another one that is pronounced boo-fay, not buff-ay or buff-ett, yet I hear buff-ay a lot. The writer also tried to claim valet is an English word, not a French word, which it's not. It's a French word that means a type of servant. I do get so tired of the dumbing down of the English language in the states. The media is helping along by leaps and bounds, too Back to the days of Aramaic, the first international language. I really think we should all speak the international language, but I'm not sure most Americans are smart enough to learn foreign languages, anymore. Then of course, we'd all fight to have our language be the international language. What was I thinking!

If the T is not meant to be pronounced, I don't pronounce it Piggles love. It is like pronouncing route as rowte, it just isn't correct. Yes, if it were decided that the whole world were to speak one language Piggles hunni, can you imagine the trouble that would cause LOL?

I've just learned I've been saying freixenet wrong all these years - people I know say it with with a French accent like 'fray-je-neigh', but it's actually a Spanish drink so is 'fresh-eh-net'. Talk about egg on my face!
When we have so many words borrowed from other cultures and countries, the rules on pronunciation are not always clear, so you do often just end up saying stuff as those around you do, and not thinking about whether it's right or wrong until you come across someone who says it differently!
More warnings from the water companies that if we don't have rain for a while, we can't keep up the current supply of water for much longer. Apparently demand for water has gone up by as much as 30% its usual rate in some areas, because of people watering large gardens and filling paddling pools. The pleas that people moderate their usage and try to use less than usual seems to be falling on a lot of deaf ears.

I think it is lovely how we have different words for things and are able to tell each other. When I think of a certain things I always think of it in both names. The comedian Steve Martin once joked, "Man, those French have a different word for everything!"
Actually, when I was in Canada, I bought a can of Arnold Palmer lemonade-tea, and kept the can as a souvenir- as it had both English and French labeling!

I had a friend once who was snotty from a young child. We were under 10. I loved the American cars of the 50's and 60's and there was a Chevrolet parked near our house I pronounced it with the T on the end and her snooty nose went up in the air and put me right. I didn't mind being corrected but I disliked the way she did it. Very true Bean hunni. Great souvenir Baz love.

It's one thing to correct someone's pronunciation, so they know how to pronounce it next time. It's totally different to do it one up someone Cool can, Baz I like bilingual packaging, and wish we had more of it. It's an easy, and relevant way for people to figure out how to say things in other languages.

Have you seen the giant balloon that's been made to welcome Trump to our country next week (paid for by crowdfunding)? It depicts him as a giant, angry baby and they have permission to fly it. There are lots of protests planned around his visit. I think the police are going to be kept busy...

We're trying real hard to get rid of him, Bean. We're hoping to vote in enough Democrats in the November elections to take over control of the House and hopefully the investigations by Robert Mueller will bear some fruit in the next few months.

I wish you all lots of luck, Baz. I fear that despite my general optimism about people power, I'm starting to think he really can do whatever he wants and get away with it, so I need to bring myself back into check as there are too many decent people to let it slide.
There are so many protests planned here at the end of the week (and a few anti-protest protests), and apparently he's totally scaled back his London activities so there will be much less pomp and ceremony to celebrate his visit in a conspicuous manner. The people who made the balloon are hoping they played a part in his decision to go elsewhere, they'd consider it a success!
Great haul, 3piggles. It really is so satisfying to gown your own food and make things from it. I hope hub's co-workers enjoy the bread - I know I would, it looks great!

Presidents seem to be above the law. The main reason given is that the world would be thrown into a stock market dive tizzy, if the US president were declared a criminal and prosecuted. Since he's innocent until proven guilty, he would stay as president until he's found guilty. Even then, his sentence could be deferred until he finishes being president, to avoid all the world upset. I think it's true that the stock markets would be in a complete freefall, which isn't good for anyone. I also think it's possible to have a plan in place to make a seamless transition from one president to the next, though Pence would be even worse than Trump, just in different ways. Trump is a white supremacist sexist pig greedy entrepreneur. Pence is a born again christian who thinks christian law should be the only law, and would set back the cause of women, nonwhites and LGBT people by millenia. Trump think the only laws that matter are the ones that make him right. Not a great choice. If we can get democrats back into congress and the senate this Fall, we can stall him at every turn, and take away his power, the way the republicans did to Obama, even refusing to even hear arguments for a supreme court justice, until their president got to choose one. How that was even legal, I don't know Then in 2020, we have to get him out of office, but with all the challenges to the Electoral College going nowhere, all he has to do is turn enough of the super delegates to the EC, and he takes the election of the popular vote, again This system is terribly flawed. Everyone knows it. No one does diddlysquat about it, and this is what happens. We get trumped! I haven't heard from hubby, I hope his coworkers liked the bread. It's really very good, though making six loaves of bread was difficult for me. I was very happy that the oven didn't heat up the kitchen, and I was able to stay by the stove to test the bread, etc.

Everyone knows it. No one does diddlysquat about it, and this is what happens. We get trumped! This is a big concern, especially if there are numerous choices other than Trump. Everyone who wants change will vote for the assorted candidates, but all Trump has to do is keep his base and he'll get re-elected. (His supporters are incredibly stubborn; I've read some articles about how his policies have cost some of his supporters their livelihoods/healthcare, but they'll vote for him again regardless.)
Pence is also a threat, but since he lacks the charisma of Our Great Leader (sarcasm) I don't see him getting as much damage done.

It is like Nazi Germany, Jo Pence believes everything can be solved through prayer, and there are enough religious zealots in this country to give him some good backing. Otherwise, as Baz said, he has not charisma. He's an unsmiling, unbending, uncaring religious zealot. Still, there is a strong faction that wants christian rule in this country. They want abortion banned. They want christianity taught in the public schools. They want christian-only prayer back in the public schools. They don't want birth control available to women, because pregnancy is god's choice, not the womans. They want to create a biblical-era society, and they've been pushing for it for decades. Their leaders have convince them christianity is under attack in the US, and they have to fight it with everything they've got. They don't give a fig who gets hurt, as long as they get their way. Just like the Dumpter's followers, and they are just as stubbornly deluded about how right they are There's no talking to any of them. If we agree with even a tiny part of anything they say, they're all "see, you admit we're right." Sigh. So, how's Brexit going, lol Seeing others having problems makes us feel less alone I see Boris Johnson jumped ship. He said he didn't think the currently approved Brexit strategy would be good for the UK. No idea if he's right or not.

As cold as this sounds, I sincerely thought most of these kinds of people would have died out by now. Seems like a bunch of rich, old, white men are desperately trying to cling to power in their last declining years.

My goodness Piggles love, that sounds horrendous. It is like going back several hundred years. The thought of not letting women practice birth control is dreadful. I agree Baz hunni, it does seem like a bunch of idiots trying to hold on to the old ways. Let's hope they don't succeed.

We've had a few more (lower profile) resignations over Brexit, people who don't think the deal we're striking is good enough. But the EU don't want us to leave, and don't want to make it look (to other countries) like leaving can give you massive benefits. So they're not going to let us out keeping all our ribbons and bows (in terms of trade etc) and that's the point.
As much as I felt like that having asked the people and told them they could decide (and my, what a moronic idea that was as the majority of people knew so little about what was involved, and were misled about the finances of the situation), we had to press forward and do it because otherwise what's the point in a vote?
But I can't believe the amount of money and time that is being wasted on this, given all the other massively important things government should be doing. And the party who have led us into it are squabbling among themselves too much to even agree on what they want. It's a joke and so many people are just fed up with it all.
A few times when we've been watching The Handmaid's Tale, I've thought about that right-wing misogynistic type (who seem to have a louder voice in the US than here) and how they have a foothold in lots of places, even if they never quite realise the power they did in the book. But sometimes it's way too close for comfort...
But hurray for the successful rescue of all those Thai boys and their coach! I am so happy they've all been got out, and it shows what the human spirit is capable of when it uses its powers for good. I have massive respect for all involved in the rescue, especially the chap who died.

Definitely cheers all around for the rescuers of those boys and their coach. I have a feeling he may think twice before putting children at risk that way, again. I have no idea why they were in that cave, that deep in that cave, that couldn't have been accomplished more safely. I'm not blaming him, just saying lesson learned. Yes, mysogeny is strong in the US, as indicated by the total refusal to elect a woman president. A female version of the same old thing would have been better than what we have now, and wouldn't have been such a freaking embarassment to the country as a whole. Racism is also alive and well, but had been driven underground by all the political correctness. It's not underground anymore. There's one white woman who calls the police on her black neighbors everytime they sneeze. She said the police were supposed to protect them from threats, and she considered her neighbors to be a threat. There was the white woman who called the police on the little black girl selling lemonade outside her house, for not having a permit, the woman claimed. There's the woman who forced some black boys out of the community swimming pool, despite them having key cards and ID saying they lived in the community. There's the white woman who called the police on the black family BBQing in a lakeside park, because they shouldn't be there. She later changed that to no one was supposed to be using an open flame in that area, which wasn't true. It's totally out of control, and doesn't even include all the unarmed black men shot to death by cops who claimed they felt threatened at the time of the shooting, and are getting away with it. Most of the cops are getting off on the criminal charges, but the civil lawsuits are costing some cities a freaking fortune! Being black in the US has never been a positive things, but it's been 50 years since the last lynching of blacks without a trial. That was done during the civil rights uprisings in the late 50s and into the 60s. The white people who did the lynchings weren't held accountable until years later, and then only for certain murders, such as that of Medgar Evers. His murderers were brought to trial, and some were really old by that time. It's documented in the movie Mississippi Burning. The US Supreme Court, in a majority decision, not a unanimous one, ruled that corporations can be considered people when it comes to donating to political elections( as if we needed any more opportunities to corrupt the political processes in this country). That meant the Koch brothers, who are ridiculously wealthy, and are the old white men Baz was talking about, could literally buy elections. They are white supermacists, bible thumpers, and people who want to control everything the way the plutocrats once did. With the republicans refusing to let Obama appoint someone to the supreme court, and the Dumpster now nominating someone with questionable ideas about how much the constitution should be applied to seated presidents(he thinks it shouldn't, which suits the Dumpster just fine), it's doubtful will get a majority decision out of the supreme court for decades, that helps anyone in this country. It's really a sad time to be American, especially with the tariffs now starting to cost American jobs, you know, those jobs Dumpty said he'd preserve at all costs. Having Boris Johnson jump ship is a blow to the original Brexit plan, not that I had any respect for the man anyway, but it's as if the whole implementing of the plan is out of control. I agree that the EU isn't going to make it look easy to leave the EU without consequences, but at the same time, the British economy is essential to the EU, and that has to be counted into the negotiations. I don't think those doing the negotiating are up to the task, which seems to be the case with both our countries, right now I hope the citizens don't get screwed too badly, by what the politicians agree to.
