Wish I could share the joy of a new month, but I'm on emergency call this month and August happens to be five weeks long, so I'll be super-grumpy for the next 31 days.

Welcome, August! Love the picture, Shades Sorry you're on call, Baz. I know that's no fun at all, and since we get all of your weather a couple of days after you do, I know it's nasty hot and humid where you are You have my sympathy. Today is hubby's birthday. He's at work, but I'll make him a nice dinner tonight This is also our back to school month, where most US school districts start the 2018-19 school year. I think my granddaughter goes back on the 29th. We have a holiday, Labor Day, on September 1, which means schools and offices are closed on 9/3. Nice to have a long weekend now and again. I think they're what Brits call bank holidays. 9/22 is the first day of Fall. Can't wait. I've had enough of summer, and still have 52 days to go. Can't wait to be able to turn off the a/c, and open windows, at least overnight. I could really use some fresh air that isn't 75% humidity. Have a great August, all

Ugh, had a close call today-(as far as emergencies go, anyway) I JUST got home when the emergency line went off! I checked the call, and someone couldn't get their window closed. Hardly a real emergency, but this is what I get paid for. I waited to feed the guys their snacks first (Priorities!) and called the tenant back- they managed to close the window, so I was saved- at least for now. (I can still get called tonight, but if I had to have left when I did, it would have meant slogging through rush hour traffic right into the heart of the city where parking is next to impossible.
Yeah, going to be a REAL long month.

Happy birthday Vic love, I hope you enjoyed your delicious dinner. We have an August bank holiday at the end of this month Piggles love at which time it is really manic here in Cornwall. You have a great August too hunni. I hope you have no more call outs Baz sweetie but if you do, I really hope they are relatively stress-free. Are you on call 24/7?

I hope you have no more call outs Baz sweetie but if you do, I really hope they are relatively stress-free. Are you on call 24/7? Just had another one, but I was able to talk the tenant through the issue, so I didn't have to drive out for this one, either. (Lucky...)
But yes, I'm on call 24/7 for 30-31 days straight. It's relentless, because I can't relax for an entire month. I can't go out or have company over, because if I get called I have to leave. Calls occur at any time, and usually when I'm trying to go to sleep.
I don't know how I managed to do this as long as I did, but of late I've learned to loathe it with the white-hot intensity of a million suns.
It feels like life is passing me by, and I have to break free.
Somehow.

That's awful, Baz. The job is taking a huge toll on you. It doesn't help when you constantly see others being allowed to slack off at your expense, and when you can't find any other options 😢 Job burnout is especially taxing under those conditions 😢 Best I can say is just hang in there. Hubby had a job where he was on call all the time, and it was rough on the whole family. Hugs! Jo, you wanted to see a potato that was colored on the inside, too. Here's one Hubby still hasn't gotten me the names. No internet or cable yesterday. Apparently a tree caught fire, fell on a hub where all the providers wires were routed, and burned the wires. It came back on at 10 last night. Couldn't get on Wheekers 😢

Oh sweetie, I am so sorry you feel like this and I can understand it completely. You just want to run and hide, I do. That is a long time to be constantly on call for, I don't think those hours would be allowed in the UK but I might be wrong. Life has passed me by hunni and I am yet to come to terms with it. You are young and I really hope something good happens so you obtain the fulfillment you seek. Here's hoping. Thanks for the potato photos Piggles love. I know this is a daft question but does it taste like white potatoes? Hugs JO xx

Yes, Jo, they all taste like potatoes. They all taste a bit different, but all like potatoes. I think hubby is going to pull the rest of them tomorrow, when it's not raining. We've had so much rain, we're afraid they're going to rot in the growing bags. Next year, we'll find some way to drain the growing bags, when we get a lot of rain, or maybe just plant them directly in the ground. That will drain.
All the rain and heat have caused the veggies to start ripening really quickly. We'll be inundated again, soon, and I have no idea what to do with it all. I really wish it came in a bit at a time, so I could keep up with it.

I would really like to try those Piggles love. I am sure there are places here where you can buy them, just not the everyday supermarkets. Are they alright mashed? The bad weather has made some things hard to get here like peaches. I had four the other they are they were ready to eat, they were just heaven.

Jo, you can mash them, fry them, roast them just like any other potatoes. Back to school is expensive in the US. We got our granddaughter an L.L.Bean backpack with a great reflective strip no one should be able to miss. We also got her everything on the list of required supplies, so her mom and dad don't have to buy everything. We got her some cool supplies, not just basic ones. Grandparents prerogative 🤗 We also got her some basic clothes, stretch leggings, a couple of tops, and a dress. Her parents will have to buy her the rest of what she needs.

Oooh I'm a stationery nut, so am drooling at those pictures - I bet Peanut will be delighted! I really like the backpack.
The red potato looks fun! I was a bit disappointed as I grew some beans that were all different colours - yellow, green and dark purple. But when you boil them, they all turn pretty much the same green colour! They'd be good in salads but we tend to mostly eat them cooked.
Baz, that sounds so gruelling, I hope you manage to power through the month. I too am surprised that you can legally be expected to be on call for such a long period without any guaranteed designated breaks, it must make living your own life impossible. Are you daydreaming about your next family trip while you're sitting in traffic? (Or just fantasising about having something happen that will mean you can tell them where to stick the job and stride off into the sunset?!)

Thank you Piggles hunni, that was a bit of a daft question LOL! Are they runner beans you have grow Bean sweetie? I just love those when they are not stringy. I love nice stationery too sweetie. Before computers, I always had my own headed notepaper.
If I won the lottery I would help you Baz hunni, I would love you to be able to tell them to stick it, as Bean rightly said.

If I won the lottery, I would help you, too, Baz. I know that's not much help, as I'm no more likely to win than you are, but I wish I could help. That white bag with the colored splotches on it is the lunch bag hubby found for her, for $1. Great find, and I think she'll love it! I love beans fresh, so I would have had a great time with your multicolored beans, Bean We grew wax beans, which are like green beans, only yellow. Hubby didn't get out to dig up the potatoes last night. It didn't cool down enough until almost sunset, so he picked what he could find. He goes out every evening, so there will probably be more tonight

The beans are more like French green beans than runner beans, Jo. Very tasty, even if they're not so colourful when cooked!

I don't think I have ever tried French beans hunni. I am not very good with my beans I'm afraid, I have never liked broad or butter beans.

He goes out every evening, so there will probably be more tonight When you plant the potato seeds, do you build a mound around it, or is the earth just flat? I'm asking because my father always built a mound, but I've only seen potato plants here in a flat field.

Shades, we used potato bags designed for potatoes. Normally they work great, but we had about 5" of rain in a week, and we think they got saturated. The one thing the bags don't do well is drain, and we really needed that this year. Last year we had a drought, so the potatoes got watered periodically, but never saturated. We weren't sure how high the bags would let the potatoes go, so next year we will use a much more sandy soil, possibly gravel, and create a deeper base, so there's some place for the water to go, sort of like mounding the way your grandfather does. We'll plant the potato seeds higher. I think we'll still have pleny of space for them to grow. We only started growing pototoes in the bags last summer, so we're still learning Heat index is up to 100F, so another fun day for anyone who has to work outside I think the heat/humidity is supposed to break Thursday, but with showers and thunderstorms, so it might not be much better. Just getting a bit of a break in the temps, and a whole lot of break in the humidity would be nice! Give all the students a last hurrah of summer, before heading back to school. We've had two new houses arrive in our community. It's been fun watching them go by, seeing what colors people picked, etc. We should have the newest area of the community inhabited by the end of the month. I think that area, which was kind of a wild wasteland, looks so much better with houses there.

Baz, that sounds so gruelling, I hope you manage to power through the month. I too am surprised that you can legally be expected to be on call for such a long period without any guaranteed designated breaks, it must make living your own life impossible. What's even funnier is that they've taken away our basic necessities, so our maintenance team doesn't have an office; we have a room with no bathroom, no thermostat to control temperature, no water source and we share half the room with a ton of storage boxes.
We used to have a dependable office with everything we needed, and the upper management decided to rent out our space to a tenant- which left us with nothing. We have a tiny fridge to store our lunches, a few chairs and tables, and a few shelves for some of our equipment. We also have no parking spaces anymore.
It's not the worst job I've ever had, but it's starting to come close.
