May means Maia’s month. Maia was an Italic goddess of spring and known as Maia Maiestas or Fauna by the Romans. She was seen as a good goddess and the 15th of May was dedicated to her.

What a great choice of picture - I used to love maypole dancing at school. I might go and skip around a bit now to relive it.

I never knew of this tradition before. We don't have it in my home country. I learned of it only after I moved and I asked my husband what's with those poles.

Haha! You should have a go!
We were down visiting my husband's family over Christmas and happened upon some Morris dancers in town - that's such a treat to watch too, with the bell shoes and the banging sticks. My family had to drag me away!
You're so lucky to be in the land of yodeling! I love it and this is one of my favourite songs EVER (I think he was German not Austrian).
I only found out Franzl Lang died a couple of weeks ago (he died in 2015), and almost went into mourning as I love listening to his stuff so much.

I just started to believe that i got a hang of the dialect... you proved me sooooo wrong with that video. I don't understand a single word, and i don't mean the yodeling part.

Don't be disheartened, you were probably just distracted by his awesome lederhosen!
Have you looked up the lyrics though? I did, many years ago, and there are only a handful of actual lines in there, and it was really hard to find a translation that made sense as it had loads of people stumped.
I've just had a quick refresh and the first verse is something like:
Mein Vater ist en Appezeller er frisst den Kas mitsamt dem Teller My father is from Appenzell he eats the cheese and the plate underneath
Does it make any more sense now? Probably not, but it's still as much fun to listen to (for me anyway!). I still think of it as 'My father is an apple seller' even though I know it's not!
It's reminded me of the little Swiss German I learnt when we went to Zurich. The greetings of gruezi (for greeting one person - no umlaut sorry!) and gruezi mitenand (for a group) and the toast of 'nur ein Schwein trinkt allein' (only a pig drinks alone) which we still do (with the eye contact unbroken until you've had your first sip)!

This year I'm leaving the tomato plants alone and I'm trying my luck with rocket. I love the taste but it's virtually impossible to find it at the market. You can buy it online but I'm sure it's not particularly fresh when it arrives. So I got myself a small bag of seeds and have used the seeds in a damp paper towel in a bag germination method. 4 of the 6 have started to grow 👏 The other two look like they will grow too 🤞

I should get on the case growing rocket too (peppery goodness!) - save myself a few quid on those pricey little bags at the supermarket. Let me know any tips you discover. I grew some in a kind of 'pick and grow' salad mix, but I don't remember the rocket being especially plentiful.

My first tip is to protect the minute seedlings with 3 or 4 old chopsticks creating a barrier for any inquisitive cats that may be passing by

Ooh, tiny but very healthy looking I hope you get a good crop, and no cats take advantage of the greens growing so close by Good luck! We'll be planting some lettuces, once it's warm enough to plant outside. We're trying to find a good way to not have them all come ripe at the same time, then bolt because we can't eat it fast enough. Hubby gave half of it away, last year, because it all ripened at the same time, then it was gone, and we didn't have anymore. I'd like to stagger the planting enough to have some growing all summer. I never knew the exact reason for May Day, but I knew about the maypole dance. Never did or saw one, as they're not done anywhere I've lived, but I've read about them in books. I can skip the yodeling, but glad you ladies enjoy it There's definitely an art to it, and I never mastered it. I think we all tried, when we were young. Never mastered the Tarzan yell, either

I think if you could yodel, the skills would definitely be transferable to a tarzan cry!
Shades, I would have thought a cat would think you've propped those chopsticks up so they can have fun batting them over?!
I'm guessing this week's new arrival is as big news on the other side of the pond too?! There aren't even any photos of said baby yet, so most of the news is speculation and people's tweets, which I can definitely live without. Ah well, I can't do anything about it - I'd just rather hear more about all the extinctions we're causing instead.

I did love Harry's enthusiasm when he made the announcement First time dad Otherwise, the speculation is over the name. I really don't know why people like to speculate so much, but they do, so the news is feeding their desire to speculate. I hope Megan had a reasonably easy labor and delivery. Considering what it takes out of a woman, I don't blame them for not wanting to make a public appearance until Wednesday. I think more Americans are interested, this time, because Megan is American, and blacks are interested because she's black. Considering that Queen Victoria wrote a letter to all her mayors telling them to encourage THOSE PEOPLE to go back to their home countries, it's good to see the royal family finally diversifying. Lots of speculation on what, if any, posts(not sure of the right word) he'll be awarded, like duke of such and such.

As much as I applaud them taking this as private family time despite all the pressure, a small part of me just wants them to tell everyone what's what so the speculation can end! I heard there's a rumour going round in certain circles that the baby is really dark skinned and the Queen has made them delay the reveal as she was only expecting a certain shade, and doesn't know what to do about it?! What a load of tommyrot!
But yes, Harry did seem genuinely over the moon, and that's lovely to see in any new parent!

Baby Sussex was revealed. He is adorable and quiet. Why couldn't I get quiet. I got a daughter with lungs like a fog horn, lol I also like that they totally broke with name tradition, and went with names important to them. It's their freaking baby, after all. Parents should be able to name their children what they want to name them, not follow some stupid archaic name formula! Basically, I think Harry and Megan took the time they needed, instead of putting themselves out for the public, which is part of Harry's way of doing things his own way. I applaud that, as I see no point to monarchies, and am glad he's being his own person, and respecting Megan's heritage. Not really surprised the racists had to have their say. Same over here And all the brainless believe everything they hear

Aren't a lot of babies quiet for the first few days?! I remember lots of sleeping and thinking things would be pretty easy, and then the shock of being born wore off and they made their demands known! I hope Archie remains nice and calm for them though, no horn lungs haha! They did seem very happy, so that's always a lovely thing to see with a new family.
There was a mildly amusing article on the BBC with other Archie Harrisons coming forward, including one man who had already named his dog that so has it shouted out at the vets!

Babies don't care about money or status. They are machines that eat, mess in their diapers, sleep, get changed, and start again. I'm glad to see Megan and Harry being parents, and not just fobbing Archie off on a nanny, while they head back to their old life. Money doesn't undo things that are wrong with us. You may think you'd feel better, if you didn't have any money worries, and you probably would, but you wouldn't feel 30 again, or even 50.
Megan has worked most of her life for her money, and she's not frivolous with it. Harry doesn't have all the royal fallderall to do, so he can be a dad and a husband, which I think is great.
If Megan were whining about Archie not getting a title to show he's somebody, or Harry were whining about being so low on the ladder, I'd be upset with them. They're talking about being new parents, joining the sleepless nights club, and learning their child's ways and needs, just as all good parents do.
Bean, when daughter left the hospital after being born, she was screaming so loudly, we figured the whole city could hear it. She never stopped. She has always talked really loudly, and before she could talk, she screamed. Not fussing, screaming. My neighbor had a little girl who cried so softly, I could hardly hear her, though after daughter, I was probably hard of hearing, lol! No, she started screaming when she left the womb, and made sure everyone knew she had arrived!
