September was the seventh month and had a length of 30 days in older versions of the Roman calendar. It eventually became the ninth month with a length of 29 days after the months of January and February had been added to the calendar. Julius Caesar added one day to the month making it 30 days long during the Julian calendar reform. September starts on the same day of the week as December every year, but does not end on the same day of the week as any other month in the year. Its birth flowers are the forget-me-not, morning glory and aster. The birthstone for September is the sapphire which means clear thinking. September Quiz: Who can name the band? Do you remember the 21st night of September? Love was changin' the minds of pretenders While chasin' the clouds away Our hearts were ringin' in the key that our souls were singin' As we danced in the night, remember How the stars stole the night away, oh yeah

Earth, Wind and Fire It's still Aug. 31, here September is one of my favorite months. It heralds in the cooler, Fall weather, and I know the summer heat will so be gone completely. Since I prepare foods by season, cooking outside in the summer, and inside the rest of the time, September means it will soon be time for the soups and sauces simmering on the stove

Oh good work Shades, and I'm liking the addition of a quiz! There were lots of rallies in the UK yesterday (should I still be posting in the August thread?!), about the shut down of Parliament. A couple of our household joined in, and my husband was very proud of his banner!

🤗 Love it! Will protests make any difference?
Had a great day, weather wise. We'll have more hot days but having windows open overnight is a great start toward cooler 6🤗

Earth, Wind and Fire Spot On! "September" is a song by the American funk band Earth, Wind & Fire. It was recorded during the sessions for their album I Am and released as a single in 1978. It was included on The Best of Earth, Wind & Fire, Vol. 1. "September" reached number one on the US R&B chart, number eight on the US Billboard Hot 100, and number three on the UK Singles Chart.

I love that song, but don't think I've watched the video before - very cool! 🤗 Love it! Will protests make any difference? Given he's threatened the sack to any of his MPs who don't back him, I doubt he's going to worry about what the mere mortals on the street think about his tactics. But still, there are many people who aren't planning to go down without a fight - or at least a placard!

I was a big Earth, Wind & Fire fan, as it was upbeat music, and good dance music. I don't know if you heard about the latest mass shooting, in Texas of all places! Texas being the state most likely to not stop anyone from doing anything related to guns, and it followed, within days, of news laws making it easier to carry guns in schools, churches, stores, etc. Now the three democrats running for office in Texas are all over the morons who passed those laws, and are apparently getting some support. We'll have to wait to see if the support goes from lip service to votes. Our governor vetoed a bill that would have closed gun purchasing loopholes, and would have made it harder to buy a gun without a full background check. He said we don't have those problems in New Hampshire, so why have laws regulating them. Of course, that means NH gun sellers can sell to people out of state, people from states with strict gun laws, without having to worry about breaking those laws in this state. We'll be one of the states where all the sickos buy their guns I really can't believe it's even legal for Boris Johnson to suspend government, all on his own, with no vote, nothing. How is this legal??? He'll ram through a Brexit deal, and all the rest of you will have to live by whatever he gets

I heard about the shooting in Texas, yes. It'll be amazing if it does help opinion change on the regulation of gun ownership in that state, but also rippling across the country. It seems so many of these shootings happen, yet it just makes people even more determined to be armed themselves. I can't understand it.
It looks like we're facing the choice between a no deal Brexit or another general election next month. If it comes to the latter and Johnson gets elected, it'll be beyond depressing. We might start fantasising about moving to a different country again...

By general election, you mean not just another Tory to be PM, right? If he gets re-elected, I think it's safe to say the die is cast, as it was in this country with 45. What the rest of the world sees about the US is totally not what most of the US is like, or about. We don't swagger around sporting guns and ammo belts. Innocent people are being murdered by the hundreds, and a lot of people are outraged. A lot of people also don't want anyone messing with their right to own and carry any guns they want, and they fight any attempt to regulate guns. Then we have governors like the one here in NH, who says we don't have a gun violence problem, so why should we add more laws to regulate it. That sounds reasonable, until one looks deeper, and sees we have online guns sales to other states that do have gun violence problems. NH is probably the safest state in the country, and has one of the smallest populations for a state this size. That doesn't mean we can just pretend we don't have the whole rest of the country around us There's a new TV show starting in a few weeks about a female private investigator on the West Coast. She kicks butts and slams people around. That doesn't really happen, any more than most of the gratuitous violence in most cop shows. We do have white cops shooting and killing black men without cause, and getting away with it. No one's going to do a show on that! Walmart announced it would no longer sell handgun ammo, and would encourage people not to enter the stores with visible weapons. Handguns are the least likely to be used in mass shootings, and Walmart will still sell handguns, as well as all the guns and ammo most often used in mass shootings. Asking people who fought for laws to allow them to swagger around with a six gun strapped to each hip aren't about to stop doing it because Walmart asks them nicely, especially where laws have been passed making it totally legal. So much for Walmart being any help

My husband didn't run much last month either - too busy being on holiday!
A general election would be a complete reset, 3piggles - we could end up with a different party (or parties) being elected, but Boris would still be PM if the Tories won again as he's been elected the leader. And he'd be even more confident he could do what he likes without anyone being able to stop him...
He lost his majority in Parliament yesterday, so has sacked all the MPs who didn't agree with him from his party (they can still serve as MPs in their elected areas, but no longer represent the Conservative Party). Next we see if the numbers are there to call for a general election, which if met, could be next month.
TV never represents a nation properly, usually just the sensationalist parts that will get people watching and buying stuff in the ad breaks. I have views of the US from the news, the TV shows and also from the people I actually know who live there. They're all quite different, but the idiots always shout much louder and seem to get their way more.

We're slowly cooling down. Today is supposed to be hot and rainy, but by Friday we're having highs in the 60s. Typical start to Fall in New England. I like it, as I have so many fewer days when I'm trapped inside in the a/c, and so many more nights when I can have the windows open. Too bad the heat made running hard, Shades. I know how hard it is to get back to normal after a long break. You'll get it back. Take you time. I fear 45 will get re-elected, simply because it's as if his supporters cannot admit they made a mistake. Obviously, the supporters who are as racist, bigoted, sexist and hate filled as he is think he's doing a great job. 45's tariffs on Chinese goods are really hurting the economy. Part of his plan is to make people buy American, again, but American goods are so expensive, people are paying the tariffs to buy from China. So unless American prices/cost come down a really long way, that's not going to happen. If anything, another country like India or Sri Lanka will start producing the goods, take that away from china, and be able to provide the goods with no tariffs. I should think the tariffs are hurting Walmart a lot, as they buy a lot from China. No one involved in Brexit, and 45 haven't considered the cost of not getting all the lower cost goods from suppliers they've used for decades, and what that will mean to the country's economy. Americans have been pushing for penalties against American companies that move out of the country, and lay off their whole work force. That would make a difference, and get some companies to stay in the US, and continue to employ the work force. But again, if costs aren't kept to a minimum, no one will buy the goods made in the US, and American companies will go out of business. There needs to be a wage ceiling set. Health care costs have to be brought under control, mortgage and loan rates have to be rolled back, and a whole lot more, if American companies are going to compete. It's the same for the UK countries after Brexit. I doubt there's any plan to implement any ceilings to ensure the economy doesn't tank, and that's a big problem. Can't help but hope there is a general election, and Johnson doesn't win. If he wins, though, there's no pretending the conservatives don't want Brexit, and it's basically a done deal. Getting the package right will only be allowed to take as long as the EU gives them, and then it's out with nothing

Feeling stiff this morning. Time to do some stretching exercises...
Even though the kids have gone back to school, it doesn't feel like summer it's over. Daytime temps are still in the 25-30°C range and at night it's still above 20. I'm still in a T-shirt and won't be digging out my warmer clothes just yet.
You mentioned about US-made products being expensive. What is happening in China is outsourcing to countries like Vietnam and Bangladesh where the labour costs are cheaper. It's not uncommon.

Oh lucky you, Shades, we've gone down to about 18c and it's really windy with lots of showers. We often have a nice couple of weeks at the start of September, but I think we're missing out this year.
Johnson didn't get the support he needed to call another general election - the consensus seems to be that we need to focus on Brexit and not allow distraction with an election, during which time he'll probably try to sneak a load of stuff through... He'll try again next week (he's trying to bait Corbyn saying he's too scared to go up against him) but it looks like he'll be forced to request an extension to the 31st of October deadline of leaving (and I wouldn't blame them for just telling us to get lost!). And on it goes!
I really hope things change for you in the next US election - give us hope!

It's been in the low 70s all day, and once the humidity from yesterdays storm dissipated, it was quite nice. It's about 68 in the house, and about 72 outside. Supposed to get cooler, especially overnight, which I love. I'm still in shorts and a tank top, so no warm clothes until it's a lot cooler. We have another football game where our granddaughter is cheering, Sunday, and weather is supposed to be fabulous, very much like today. American football really isn't a hot weather sport, but because of school starting dates, football squads end up practicing, and sometimes playing, when it's in the high 90s. Not at all good, and players get sick. Shades, I think it's human nature to get as much as possible for as little as possible. That's why so many American companies moved overseas, where workers were paid a whole lot less, and taxes were a whole lot less. It's actually funny to thing China outsources to even less expensive countries. Those countries will start up their own manufacturing, and lure Americans to buy from them, if the tariffs continue with China. American companies will go where the cost is the lowest, period. That said, part of the reason for the tariffs is because of the American companies that moved overseas, dumping all their employees on the unemployment lines, causing them to lose houses and cars they could no longer pay for, all for the almighty dollar. Yet, the American buying public demanded that. We will shop at the cheapest stores, especially for things that don't have to be very expensive, and that sent a strong message to American manufacturers to make the products cheaper, or we weren't going to buy them. So they did exactly that, but dumping the highest paid workforce in the world. I really don't see a solution, as to get American companies back, we'd have to lower all wages and salaries, all the loans, food, medicine, you name it those salaries pay for, and basically reset to about 1970. I don't see banks, hospitals, or anyone doing that, so it's not going to happen

This is off topic to anything we're discussing, but I had a mild shock on another message board I like to frequent- it has a large section devoted to posting games, and there's a considerable number of members who show up, drop whatever picture they found elsewhere in the thread and leave until they find something else to post that they've found.
These people never join in discussions or reveal much of anything about themselves. Consequently, I find them uninteresting and not of much value to the board community. Sharing something you found funny/clever/insightful is one thing, provided it's done occasionally, but when that action comprises nearly 100% of your posts, well... that's dull to me.
Anyway, there was also a thread for complaining, and one of these members revealed themselves to be a woman nearing her mid-60's when the topic was aches & pains of getting older. I guess I was astonished simply because I would have thought someone of her age would want to spend their internet time more constructively.
I suppose it takes all kinds.
I hope I don't sound overly judgmental here.

I think when a generation has grown up with it being normal to endlessly repost stuff by way of trying to engage with others, it doesn't surprise you so much that they do it. But when someone who didn't grow up brainwashed into thinking it was quality interaction, it is more of a surprise that they get into it! I guess it's all the same in that it's a person wanting to connect with people though, and some people struggle with that, whatever their age.
Are you planning to go and watch your granddaughter cheer again, 3piggles? I bet the team will get a load of new fans from people supporting the cheer squad!

Sunday at 3 p.m. We'll be cheering on the cheerleaders at the game I think different people grow up treating personal information differently. My daughter was one to post about every headache and sore toe, but she outgrew that. I think it was an attention getting mechanism. Now I have a couple of friends on Facebook who post about everything they do, as if they live their lives twice, once an actuality, and once on Facebook. They give out way too much personal and private information, but that's how they are. They don't seem to think there's anything wrong with airing all their laundry, clean or dirty, with all their Facebook friends. I've never been that way. I was raised never to air any laundry, dirt or otherwise, in public, as it was no one's business, and we didn't want them thinking they could be part of our business. As my mother would have said, "It's just not done!" The other thing she said was no one cares, which is probably more to the point. I always worked on that basis, and kept my problems to myself. I have found, though, and don't know if this applies to that woman at all, that airing some information often brings out others with similar problems, and some possible solutions. I know all about the aches and pains of older age, so I can relate to her. I have a special group of friends on Facebook, a small chat group, and of the 4 of us, 3 of us have arthritis, and two of us have it to the point of being debilitating. It's good to be able to grouse with others who understand exactly how we feel, and we are a great support group for each other. The forth member is a whole lot younger than the rest of us, but just a wonderful and supportive person. We talk about all sorts of things, not just our aches and pains. It's just nice to be able to discuss the aches and pains, find out what's working for one or the other, etc. I basically think a lot of people talk to social media friends as if they were real friends, the kind we've had since high school or college, know well, and trust. It's as if they don't really understand that they don't know any of these people, have never met them. I fell as if I really know the others on our chat group, and have actually known them through Wheekers and Facebook for over a decade. I'm probably closer to them than to some people I see on a regular basis. Also, just as social media is a place to air grievances, and judge people we'd never judge in person, it's a place where some people seem to feel safe airing personal things they can't really talk to physically close friends about. It's kind of sad that some people are removed enough from other people as to be emotional shut-ins, and for them, social media is their only way to reach out and connect

It's kind of sad that some people are removed enough from other people as to be emotional shut-ins, and for them, social media is their only way to reach out and connect I agree wholeheartedly with this; I just wish (some) people would just come out and show a bit more of who they are, rather than just showing up to dump something they found and then take off. I went off on a rant on that other board about how user-created content was much better than user-found content, but that's just me tooting my own horn again.
Speaking of dirty laundry (sort of) I also get tired of people who do expose themselves, but only a single facet and never anything else- in this case, that other board has a thread for um... adult activity, and a handful of members constantly bragging about their endless exploits with the opposite sex are also crashing bores to me.
On a related note to what you mentioned about social media friends, I find it fascinating that there are people that I would consider friends, yet I have never met them in real life. Some I have texted, some I have spoken with over the phone, but a handful are still on the digital side, so to speak.

I think I'm closer to some of my social media friends, than I've been to real friends. I know what you mean. That feeling that, if you met up, you'd have a good time with them, good conversation.
Someone once said the more people brag about their sexual exploits, the less sex they're actually having. I think there's something to that. I always figured it was something between partners, not to brag about on a forum. It's different if it's discussing a problem that might need medical attention, and trying to get some valid information before approaching a doctor. Otherwise, keep it to yourself.
