oh its such a shame about him.... you just cant have him put down, Helen Keller lived a life of being deaf AND blind. maybe if you use a dog clicker everyday at the same feeding time where his food is, he will know by hearing where the click, to associate it to where the food is. dont give up!

A dog clicker is a good idea and no way will i give up. When you think he was being fed by hand five times a day and now only twice, he is doing great. If only i could get him to nibble on hay or veg, i would be over the moon. And thanks for all your advice. ;D

Eep to start can you make the pictures about 500x500pixels..if you have problems paste me a URL and I can fix them for you. Or show you how. (its slowing down the post here) I cant say much I have known cavies that were blind that had pink eyes...then again some have it as a part of a breed....as in pink-eyed white or albino...was one of the parents pink eyed? Or do you know? And by know the baby shouldnt need any kind of milk. Try putting pellets fortified in VitC and a few baby carrots or kale in a food processor and chop it up. Not puree just chopped up so there are small bits left. Use a toddler sp o on to offer this to the baby. Run a little on his gums and when he starts to smack keep offering it. Also you need to offer a probiotic (healthy poop from another pig mashed to a sort of soup or paste with food or water) to help the digestive track except the change. The cows milk will mess up a piggies stomache. I think you should get your baby off the cows milk if you havent already. Try baby foods such as carrots or peas mixed with the pellets. I have used a little warm water about 1/4 cup, 1 tables po on baby food carrots, and 2 table spo ons pellets and made a warm mash by stamping with a sp o on. Then use a 1cc dropper to feed your pig. Place the dropper behind the teeth and gently sqeeze a small amount into its mouth and when they start making a chewing motion slowly sqeeze the rest. I did this about every other hour at about 3ccs each time. And its hard with the water because it can get in their lungs. But do the same with water. You might need to get some pedialite or the drink they offer children at drug stores for dehydration to keep him hydrated.

They may have had failure to thrive or mild scurvy (I had a very young pig who had both). The little one may not be brain-damaged though. There is a very large thread here: www.caviesgalore.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=37383 that has info on Jasmine and her treatment. Be forewarned though, it's 19 pages long and there are over 460 posts with over 5,000 views. However, there may some answers to your questions in it. I would skip the milk and follow the suggestions that people offered me and that I tried and also follow samnbud's suggestions above. I have a pig here who has mild cataracts and she is fine. I was also asked to take in two older females who are blind and they are fine except that they can't see. The important thing is to keep the cage setup consistent and not keep moving things around. Also, if there are problems that he is being picked on at some point, he may need to live on his own but near others.

Josie, Pssc simply needs to rethink what they post so that people can get the information they need.

Good for you for not giving up. His progress might just be slow. Do you have a scale so you can weigh him? Our members have shared lots of advice.

I was wondering how how you fed him the milk? (Sorry if you have already stated how I didnt read through all the pages before asking) As a cavies teeth grows at a some what faster rate during the wheening period I wondered if you feed him with a ni ppled bottle ? Could this have affected his teeth in a way?

Could this have affected his teeth in a way? I feed him with a very small syringe. His teeth seem fine, they were also checked by the vet. I had him out on the lawn this afternoon, right by me and kept talking to him so he wouldnt be frightened, but he wont eat the grass. I have hand fed baby piggies before, but none of them were like this piggie. I dont know what his weight is, i will weigh him but you can see his spine he is so thin.

Izzy had to be housed separately for over a year due to her ringworm (that took forever to go away). She ate absolutely no veggies until she was placed in a cage with another pig. She realized that they must be something good and she gave them a try and now loves them. Jasmine didn't eat pellets when I first got her and she rarely eats them now ... I think she just moves them around so it looks like she's eating them. However, she does eat some of the Gerty Guinea mix. She may never learn to eat them since I can't place her with other pigs since they harass her or chase her. However, since yours is blind, he can't watch others eat and may wonder what all of the action (eating) going on around him is about. Veggies don't have a very strong odor but maybe sprinkling some fragrant herbs on top might entice him. The original version of Oxbow's Critical care contains anise and Jasmine preferred over the new flavor: banana/apple (I ended up mixing the two). She had severe malnutrition but it time she gained weight and stopped (on her own) eating the Critical Care (I put it in a little saucer).
