I have taken a baby piggie in, he is seven weeks old and is being fed on fresh milk three times a day. He does eat a little dry food mix but not enough.I don't like the idea of fresh milk, but he has had it for weeks. His Mother passed away at nine days, my nice has done her best with him and kept him alive. If he stops having the milk he becomes very weak, so what do i do. He wont eat grass or veg, but i keep trying.Should i change his milk or what. I know fresh milk is no good for him, but it as kept him alive.I would like your advise as i am not sure what to do

On this website, go to General Guinea Pig Chat Look for Jasmine rescue with various medical problems Click on the first link You will see what Skipperdoo has been doing for Jasmine. She fed her Oxbow's Critical Care.
Your piggy needs to be seen by a vet!

Baby apples.....the kind for 4month olds.... I always give any failing babies this and they seem to 1. like the taste if warm.. 2. of course need the vit C..and 3.seem to acept any change in diet if mixed in with it..
As to milk I would swap to a pet milk...Im not sure what you have over there but here we have whiskas (cats) milk....better than cows milk......or even better but may be australian only is wombaroos cavy replacement milk..its designed specialy for piggies....
I would say he isnt eating because of the cows milk...and his tummy would be hurting....
Besst of luck with him Cheers Fiona

[quote author=poms board=care thread=1120990809 post=1121025740 I have tried to give him Critical Care, but he wont take it.[/quote] Sorry about your babies problems Pauline. I know it sounds cruel, but its best to force feed him as his tum needs the fibre. If I don't have any Recovery in (similar to Critical Care) I mash some of their Oxbows pellets. I use a 1cc syringe and just cut the end off so the mash runs freely through it. You proably know this, but if you aim slowly behind the front teeth and aim as though your aiming for the other side and not down the throat. A little and often is best, say every 1 to 2 hours. Keep normal food availble in his cage to, just incase he decides to eat on his own. Do you have any Timothy hay? most piggies love munching on it. My order is due tommorow so I could send you some. Like kingscountry has mentioned, the milk isn't good for him and isn't making his digestive system work hard. Is he drinking? if not he'll need syringes of water to with prehaps some probiotic for his gut flora. Vitamin c to. Heres a good link www.oginet.com/Cavies/cvbabs.htmI really hope he'll be alright.

Thank you all for your help. I have been back to the vets, he was shocked that he was still alive. I still think that he is brain damaged, but the vet said that he cant tell, but he is blind. Sorry the pic is so big.

Janet, he just sits there and haves trouble finding his water bottle, i know he cant see but there is some thing that isnt right with him. He goes straight past his veg, hay and grass, i just thought he would be able to smell them.I cant really explain, you would have to see him, he walks fine, slow but he dont have a problem with it. His Sister had some thing wrong with her front leg, i thought it was broke, but was wrong. She walks fine now and her leg looks great. I think they were lacking some thing from the mothers milk. The Mothers milk was dried up a few days before my nice had noticed, so all the babies must of been starving. They are seven weeks old and tiny, one of the other sisters had no problems and is doing fine. The first vist to the vets he wanted me to put him to sleep, but i cant. He isnt in any pain, he just dont move around much, he has a good pair of lungs and lets me know when he wants milk. He will eat his dried food, but very slowly, his mouth was checked and every thing seems fine. Here is a pic of his sister.
