We're all checking in to see how you and Koko are doing. With Saige and the babies you have your hands full.

Things seem about the same.
There was a decent amount of pus when I flushed her neck; darn. But it doesn't appear to be getting bigger. The side of the neck/shoulder lump is still there, and still quite moveable.
The rest of the crew are doing well; I'll update on the Saige/babies thread.

Just pulled out another inch and a half stitch today that was hiding in a never-healing scab. Now I know why. I can't believe I didn't 'see' it. I was trying to 'wipe' off the scab to work on her neck, and it wouldn't come off. I finally broke out some tweezers, and gently started to pull, when I saw that something was attached 3/4 inch below and above where I was pulling.
Another darn stitch. Seven weeks later!
At least she's acting OK.

Wow! Hopefully that was it. I see she got her never give up attitude from her mommy. I know you have wracked your brain for the cause of all of this.

I hope we've turned a corner, but every time I try and post the good news something else goes wrong.
BUT, today, I checked Koko's neck again, and the abscess that had reformed at the bottom of her incision line and then burst, is getting quite small!!!
All along the two vets thought it could be scar tissue in it, and I know it was leaking pus since it was the primary spot I'd use to flush. However, it is down to almost normal today! Perhaps the bump left is the scar tissue, but this is as encouraged as I've been.
Her course of chloramphenicol was officially up on Sunday, but I have enough to go two more weeks, and after reading of relapses after stopping the ab's I've decided to continue until finished. The vet was OK with that idea, and even suggested we might consider a refill.
For now, though, I think this is the best we've had since her surgery 7 weeks and 2 days ago.
Funny, my daugher that's her *mommy* is away at camp this week.

You know this is gross but when you say scar tissue and puss it reminded be of something. I had my ear holes closed up and then I got them re-pierced very close. Maybe 6-8 monthes after they were re peirced the scar tissue started coming out like puss. It was really gross. My friend had to have stiches for the same thing. I really have know clue what is going on with your guinea pig since I didn't read the hole thread but maybe if its scar tissue you can have it drained. I don't know but mine went away.

Also when the scar tissue is there it leaves there is a big lump, it sometimes gos away (mine did).

Jemima this is the best news in almost two months. I also hope she has turned the corner. She will always be your special piggy, or grandpiggy?

Yes, my grandpiggy! All five of them 'belong' to my children, although I oversee or do everything.
Mushroom and Mandarin are my great-grandpiggies!!
I am very excited. I really hope this means this ordeal may be behind us. I have read a lot about recurrences of abscesses, but I am hoping her extremely long courses of antibiotics will have kicked in. She was on Bactrim a week, Baytril for four weeks, and currently chloramphenicol now for 2 1/2 weeks.
She still has the lump on the side of her neck/shoulder, but I am gambling it's a lipoma, or however you spell it.
Thanks for the comment!

Even though it seems like a long time, some pigs and other critters are on antibitoics for life.

I have heard that, and it is one reason I will be terrified if/when she is off antibiotics. But I definitely think she needs to be on the chlor for at least 4 weeks.

OK--More good news, I hope, I think!! The abscess pocket is getting even smaller! But the kicker is when giving Koko her chlor tonight, I could NOT find the other lump in her shoulder/neck area! I have often had trouble finding it before, but I always eventually found it. I sure hope we are nearing the end of this. Here's a pic of Koko from June 29, 2005:

Very cute and healthy looking! (Does she also have a head tilt or is that the way it looks in the photo?)
