well, today i picked up my piggy fudge, i had her on her back which she likes and was stroking her, i felt a lump on her side so i parted the hair to look at it and there was a hard black lump surrounded by a crusty scab. if it doesnt improve we are putting some Savlon on it to clean it but my mum doesnt think she needs the vet so we cant get a prescription or anything. i am sure it is a bite from the newbie, coffee, because she seems fond of biting everyone who gets in her way.
can anyone advise me on what to do?! i feel so bad that i hadnt noticed it before.

You're right, it's probably a battle wound so to speak. I wouldn't worry about it unless it looked infected or irritated. Usually if it's just a bite wound they heal up pretty quickly in pigs. I've had boars with abcessy looking things with puss leaking out - as gross as it was I've been able to clean it out and keep it reguarly clean so that infection doesn't occur.
Just keep an eye on it and if it starts to look like it's causing Fudge any distress you should press your Mum for a Vet trip.

If the wound is bad or infected looking you could clean the wound with some Aserbine Dermisol lotion or mild non fragrant soap and rinse well with water and swab it with povidone iodine (Bentadine). I don't suggest this unless you have an adult supervising. Just keep an eye on it and if it starts to have a funny smell or the lump gets bigger or gives her pain then I would call the vet.

i am now sure that it is a scab because i kind of prised the side up and there was a pool of blood underneath. i have to say the lump doesnt seem to be growing, i think it is a clod of dried blood.
Skipperdoo- i will try and take a picture of it and post it on here.

I'd discontinue with the savlon as it may not be safe if Fudge manages to lick it and digest it.
Hopefully its just a bite wound that will dry up and heal quickly. Like a few have mentioned, any changes and he will need to see a vet.

When one takes in any critter, it then becomes the responsibities of the caretaker to provide for its needs and those needs sometimes include medical care. Maybe you can get someone to drive you to the vet?

Please get your piggy help. Sounds like she needs it. I am very worried if this is a bite injury as if this pig is being bullied by a cage mate to such an extent it should be seperated. I hope this is what everyone would do if they thought their pig had been bitten. Otherwise I;m thinking it could be a skin problem. Mites or fugus can cause the piggy such terrible discomfort it scratches itself until it bleeds. I have seens some advanced ones with nasty scabs as you describe. Please check out this website and see if any other symptoms ring true www.gorgeousguineas.com it is uk based but the identification section will still help you. If you think it does sound like your pig we will speak again. Please take your piggy to the vet. This is something all pet owners should do as animals need it as they need water and food and cannot get it from anywhere else than from you. Just think how uncomfortable and saw its back must be. Let us know how you get on and if you want to e-mail me about it at anytime do... I will try and help you.

thankyou everyone.
skipperdoo- i told my mum this and she shrugged it off, i feel so angry!
susie- i am seriously considering putting coffee in a cage on her own. its not fair on the others, they were so peaceful before i purchased her, or i might take toffee out and put her with coffee. but then what would fudge, snowy and tufty do without her? they practically worship her!
on the other hand when i watched them earlier they looked so peaceful and i think things are settling down now.
Arrgh! what should i do?! *sobs*

Thats about 16"x48" ...we do use inches.
30cm = 12in
40cm.....30cm is 12in and you have 10cm left over so thats about 2.5cm per inch. 122cm....hmm I would say that 120cm is about 48in and you have 2cm left over so I would even worry about them!
Am I confusing you? EEk just look online LOL. And I did this with no chart!!
