He's been back at the same time every night since we first saw him and spends quite a lot of time pottering about. We've seen lots of hedgehogs in our garden before, but mainly travelling along the boundaries and getting food from the flowerbeds. I have some little sachets of cat food left from when we've found sick hedgehogs before (it's what you're advised to feed them) so have put a little dish of food out for him (a saucer would be better but that was what I had handy and he still gets every morsel!). Not a great picture as it was pretty dark, but here's my chum!

I couldn't figure out if it was his tongue or a chunk of cat food?! Cute anyway!

Bovril's become a regular nightly visitor (hence earning himself a name!).
I contacted someone at a hedgehog rescue this week, as one time when we'd put food out and he came while the patio doors were still open, I noticed him sneeze a few times while he was eating. He looks in fine health, but I know they're susceptible to lungworm and wondered if I should be keeping a closer eye on him. Anyway, they said it's probably just pollen, which makes sense. I can totally empathise too as pollen levels have been so high here that I've been doing a fair bit of sneezing myself, I just hadn't thought of it as affecting hedgehogs!

Animals seem to be as susceptible to pollen allergies as we are. Actually, to allergies in general. Glad that's all it is 🤗 Walking past the river this morning, got some nice shots of the fog on the river. The sepia shot is the Pro setting. The middle shot is the Live Focus setting, and the third shot is the Photo setting, with no effects added.

All of them are gorgeous, but I think I like the Live Setting the best, followed by the Sepia. But it's still a close race in my book.
It reminded me that there's a creek a few minutes from my house that sometimes has a nice mist over it in early mornings, but ever since I changed jobs I don't get up early enough to see it anymore.

I know my phone's camera can do a whole lot more than I do with it, but for now, I just really like capturing some of the more interesting scenes My latest creation. It still needs to be painted, and all the ends capped. The birds love it. It will also have the big seed feeders, come cold weather. It is rock solid, and it should be squirrel proof. I hope I can get the feeders onto the bars, lol. I wonder if the bear can tip it. It's 3/4" galvanized pipe.

We have a much younger hedgehog visiting regularly, who we've imaginatively named Bovril Junior. He started occasionally coming out during the day (which is usually a bad sign with hedgehogs unless they're nesting) but seemed healthy and active so we thought maybe his nest had been disturbed and his body clock was off. But one afternoon he looked a bit wobbly and went to sleep in a flowerbed in the sun, so we rang our vets (who happen to be a designated wildlife support place) and arranged to take him in. After 24 hours observation and some tests, they said he was quite healthy so we went and collected him to be released (and we now know he is indeed male) so he's back. He was out in the afternoon again yesterday, but hopefully he's okay - keep your fingers crossed for him please.

All digits crossed, definitely! Are you putting out any food for him? What do they eat? He may have been abandoned, or his mom killed, and not really know how to be a hedgehog. Only so much is instinctive to them, and if he's always been on his own, his clock may be totally out of wack, because he's always had to be tuned to the sound of predators. They all have back stories. We just don't know what they are. He's adorable

He was out again during the afternoon yesterday and I just didn't feel convinced he was okay, so contacted a hedgehog rescue who I knew were full (hence why we took him to the nominated vets before), but just to get their advice. They said if he's young, out during the day and sleeping in the open, he's definitely not alright, as I'd suspected. They made space for him and straight away she said he's underweight and most likely has lungworm as his breathing was snuffly, so fingers crossed his treatment goes well. She said the vets vary massively in what they pick up, so it looks like we drew one of the not so hedgehog savvy ones as I doubt he was in A1 health a couple of days ago.
I've followed the rescue's FB page so will keep my fingers crossed for a positive update, and if he recovers, he'll come back to us to be released with supported feeding. We've been putting out meaty (not fishy) cat food and she said last night that cat biscuits are also good. Anyway I feel very relieved he's in the right place now.

Oh, excellent! I'm so glad you got him to someone who really knew what was wrong Hopefully he'll be back in your garden, soon, eating cat food and being cute What are cat biscuits. I googled it, but when cats kneed something with their paws, it's called making biscuits, and that's all I got for my search I wondered if cat biscuits are dry cat food, or dry cat treats?

I think it's just the dried food rather than anything treaty (I occasionally feed some cats when their owners are away and they have dried food as one of the cats is prone to vomiting and the dried food is apparently less messy to clean up!).
Sadly Bovril Jr had died overnight. I'm gutted we wasted three days when he could have been having treatment. The rescues are so full that you can't always get them in there, so the only other option is a vet, and I'm really disappointed they didn't pick anything up as it's apparently very common in hedgehogs. I will feed back what happened next to them.

I'm so sorry Poor Bovril deserved better than that, and so did you, thinking you were taking him to someone who could help him RIP, Bovril <3 I have to admit, I was looking forward to more pictures of him, and stories to go with them. He was adorable <3
