My next effort: Again, I followed the instructor's orders, but if you look closely there are a few errors. The upper section of the mast (I don't know the nautical terminology, and a Google search proved useless) is missing an entire side for some reason, and the lower section would be too if it were not for the fact that I was able to duplicate the missing side and flip it around. This image is also meant to have a cartoon-like appearance and not photorealistic. The logs were supposed to be identical in color, but for some reason when I colored one log, they were not linked and therefore I had to do each one individually, which was tiresome.

Looks great! I can't tell what's wrong with the mast, even though you've explained it, so I'm not deducting any marks there.
The logs remind me of a Kit Kat! (Do you have them over there?)

Yes, we have KitKats over here- haven't had one in a few years, but they are delicious! (The instructor wanted a low-resolution look to the scene as opposed to photorealistic.) The bottom horizontal post is passable, but if you look closely at the top one, you'll see gaps between the post and the rope that should be tied securely around it- the upper sections of rope float loosely above the wood because the top halves are gone. When you're building objects, nothing has substance, so trying to create the missing half and lining it up is a challenge, as there isn't any way to tell when the halves connect. They tend to be too far apart or they blend into one another. (You have to go into a mode where you see the framework of each object, but as an amateur it doesn't make things much clearer.) It's a bit like trying to push clouds together but not wanting them to mix into one single entity.

I noticed the ropes around around the top boom, and the sail not being equally secured on both sides, but I never found the missing part of the upper mast. I also wouldn't have noticed some of the other things, had you not mentioned them. What I see is a really good start. You've gone this far, and you will figure out what you're doing wrong, or not doing. Once you figure out the tricks, you'll be able to apply them to anything.

This isn't really a picture, but it's another effort of mine from Blender: It's my first attempt at motion graphics, and it's not bad, if I do say so myself. I found a paid tutorial yesterday (only $40) and it's proved invaluable already! I have about five more lessons to go through, and then I can adjust my demo reel and apply for more jobs that require this sort of ability!

Very good! I'm not going to watch it for too long as the sense of movement is realistic enough to stir up my motion sickness - bravo!

My next attempt: I lost some momentum dealing with nonsense this week, but I'll try to pick back up where I left off. Little by little I'm moving along, and although I still make mistakes, I'm starting to figure out how to fix them without going back to square one every time. I may even try to tackle that dratted donut tutorial down the road again.

Great stuff, and getting to grips with things enough to correct errors without going through the whole procedure again definitely reflects some embedded learning. Bring on the doughnut!

Cool! I realize I'm not the one who has to like it, but I'm impressed

Thank you, ladies. I'm planning on finishing another lesson from this set (there are about 7, and I completed 2 so far) and then I think I'll try to create new graphics of my own using the skills from the first three lessons. If I can master those, I'll continue with the remainder and move on to bigger things. This way, the repetition should strengthen my skills.

I think that's a great idea. I need to do a lot of repetition to remember things, and if I stop doing it, I forget how to do it Being proficient at what you've already trained to do is better than not being proficient at a whole lot more. Good thinking!

I'm running into issues with Blender- nothing I can't figure out, given time- but I'm seeing that I should devote just a little more time to learning more DaVinci Resolve techniques. I spent Saturday trying to figure out why I couldn't animate the camera in Blender and finally decided to spend Sunday on something with a less-steep learning curve! I added a few new tools to my toolbox, and one of them is digital sky replacement! This is a sample from my ziplining video with a more colorful sky! It's not perfect, but not bad for a first-timer. I need a bit more shorter projects that turn out mostly successful instead of struggling for a week on one that might be okay. I'm not giving up on Blender- I just need to step away every now and then.

Good work, I wonder if you did that with enough of your photos/ clips, you'd actually start remembering the weather as being much better than it was?!
I'm sure taking those breaks from learning gives your brain the chance to file everything it's taken in so far a whole lot better - we all have limits!

I couldn't open the picture, sorry Hehehe, that's a good approach, Bean. Go on vacation and it rains the whole time, just change the sky to what you'd rather have

A couple of photos from a recent trip to Brimham Rocks. I could have got far more impressive pictures as it's a spectacular place, but it was so cold and windy that we were all trying to keep our hands in our pockets if we weren't climbing!

Oh, those look spectacular, Bean! They remind me of an area in southern Illinois where there are massive rock formations that look a little like Brimham. I should try to see if I can dig up some footage, because I don't think I ever posted anything online before.

Wow! I can imagine it's a fantastic place to visit, and to climb if you're into that. Yes, it's hard to take pictures with your hands in your pockets Maybe you'll get another chance to go there when it's warm and sunny! Love the pictures

On the plus side, it was much quieter because of the weather! So we had loads of time where no one else was in sight as we were exploring, which definitely added something to the experience. (That was also partly as we were staying nearby - most people have a longer drive so it was busying up as we left.)

My parents always took us places off-season. Places to stay, and probably even restaurants are less expensive then. There really are a whole lot fewer people around than at peek season times, which is nice in it's way. It's just going to the beach when it's really cold out isn't quite the same as going when we can swim. Glad you had a great time
