Near disaster was averted this week. After I started my new job this past month, I have not been on top of weighing the GPs like I once was. I used to once a week, every week. But, alas, I faltered and got out of the habit for 3 weeks. All was well with Irving, Luna, Chuck, Melody and Estrella on this monday's weighing. But Lyric... She had lost 12oz, having gone from 2lbs 4oz to 1lb 8oz. We took her to the vet that same day. She was given a mild anesthetic and the vet checked for misaligned teeth with buccal pad separater. He said that her teeth were fine so he did a fecal float and it was shown that she had giardia parasites. The vet put her on Flagyl and sent us hime to see if it help. Today, four days later, she is eating on her own and has gained 3oz already. We've been feeding her Oxbow Cavy Complete and Alfalfa to help her gain the weight back. Morel of the story.... Weight Your Guinea Pigs Weekly! Here are some pics of her having some alfalfa and romaine with our cat Sam tonight. And Irving with Sam

Hey Guinea Salad I've moved house recently and have got out of the habit of weighing mine - so well reminded to get back to it! Great pics - I love the whole cat-and-pig thing - I think my Silvie is more scared of the pigs than they are of her. I do sometimes find them nose to nose, throught the cage, checking each other out though - they're all just too nosey!

Good reminder and glad you caught that. Since mine have finally stopped having UTIs every few days, I've gotten out of the habit of weighing regularly, too. I really must get back in the habit. Glad she's doing well and gaining back some of that weight.

I have to confess that I need a new scale so I, too, am out of the habit. Glad you caught something before it became a huge problem!
