This was my Tribe when I joined Wheekers in September 2009:
The Tribes now:
My current piggies:
Teddy sisters Nia and Nerys arrived in May 2009, aged 10 months old. Nia (NEE-ah, "bright") is the top lady of the Tribe, while big Nerys ("lady") of the ample Battenberg bum can be very grumpy and likes to do her own thing although she has mellowed somewhat over the years!
My aby Taffy ("beloved") joined the Tribe in August 2009 together with her last rescue born daughter Telyn. It has taken a long time to bring her round, as she was part of a major rescue operation from a very bad place. Since her daughter Telyn's sudden death, Taffy has become the new top sow of the Troop, which consists mainly of my piggies that have issues of some kind. Taffy's are advanced cataracts.
Coronets Cariad (KAHR-yad; "darling") and Ceri (Kerrie; "love") came in November 2009; they were handed into rescue by a breeder and were very nervous. Ceri is a very sociable girl and Cariad is always late for dinner! Ceri has now joined the Troop after a health scare.
Ffowlyn (FOWL-in; "chicken, fowl"), my aby cross, sneaked in as a tagalong to her mum Ffion in March 2010; I was sure that nobody else would notice yet another red and white piggy! She really looks like a bantam chicken from the the back, hence her name. She's my hormonal girl and moved over to the Troop after she was being rather badly bullied by Hywel.
Caron ("loving", pronounced KAH-ron; from her rescue name Carron) is another coronet that has come in November 2010 after being part of a large number of a closing down breeder's piggies that had been advertised as life snake food and were rescued in a very bad state all thrown together in a rat and mice infested shed. She's my naughty girl!
Tanni ("fire", pronounced TAN-nee), the peru cross, was love on first sight at a local rescue where she was handed in just before Christmas by a backyard breeder in a group of very malnourished and matted boars because she was too skittish for the lady to be bothered with; Tanni joined me at the beginning of 2011 as soon as my mother-in-law had safely left after the Christmas holiday...
Dominant Hywel is Llewelyn's successor as patriarch of the Tribe. His name is pronounced Howell and means "eminent", after early Welsh king Hywel Dda/Howell the Good. Unfortunately, he developed life threatening post neutering op complications within days of him coming here in February 2011, but he has since made a full recovery and is now very much the top piggy of the Tribe.
Three year old Tegyd (former Mrs Taggy; her new name means "beautiful like a doe" and is pronounced TEGG-id) came here in June 2011 because nobody wanted to rehome a mature sow that was going blind with cataracts and had lots of attitude! She's Taffy's new best friend and they make a formidable team!!!
Shy coronet/shorthair cross Terfel (his name means "oak prince" because of his little ginger crown. It is pronounced Tervel) was rescued with 18 other boars from a shed floor; he was very malnourished and his face covered in sores. He was chosen by Taffy and Tegyd as their new "husboar" when I took them for a round of dating at a suitable rescue. Terfel has come in on in leaps and pounds since he came here in July 2011.
I rehomed my two peru sisters Ffwlbri (pronounced FULL-bree, "moonshine") and Tesni (TESS-nee, "(sun)warmed") in October 2011 after their rescue had not had any interest in them in several months. Tesni looks like our first family piggy Wuschel from the seventies; that's why I couldn't get them out of my mind. They had come into rescue totally matted at three months old in a filthy rat cage.
Not even two weeks later on October 26th 2011, I had the shock of my life: Tesni had given birth to a little baby overnight without showing any signs of being pregnant at all! The little girl has been given the name Tegan Syndod ("beautiful" & "surprise", pronounced: TEE-gan SUN-dod), in memory of my last little'un Telyn whose baby name was Tegan. Rather eerily, Tegan has more than a passing similarity to my first own piggy Strolch from the eighties! I feel very strongly that she was meant to be...
In order to find a playmate for Tegan, I came across sisters Heulwen and Hedydd, who were part of a "cat's takeaway" (piggies running and multiplying freely in a backyard). Their mummy promptly had another litter of six identical ginger and white girls in rescue, so the group became known as the "Ginger Army". Hedydd (HEDD-ith, "skylark") joined just before Christmas 2011 and her slightly older sister Heulwen (HYLE-wen, "sunshine") in January 2012 after the end of her pregnancy watch. Bold Hedydd lives with the Tribe and timid Heulwen with the Troop.
Ffraid (Freya) and Bethan (Betty) have found a home here as permanent lodgers in May 2012 after their previous owner lost her home and urgently needed to find indoors homes for her mostly older piggies. Quiet Ffraid (pronounced FRYDE) was four years old on arrival and her best friend, cheeky Bethan (BETH-an), two. Freya was a tiny baby mum and Betty is a child's ex-pet. They have both joined the Tribe. Even though they look like twins, Ffraid and Hedydd are not related at all - it's sheer coincidence!!!
MUCH MISSED:
Hafina (Hah-VEE-nah, "summer") arrived in August 1st, 2010. She'd been dumped in a cardboard box on a hot, sunny day on a very shocked private person's doorstep and her chances for finding a new home were pretty inexistent due to an unsightly eye problem. She was a very gentle, loving girl who got taken care of by the whole Tribe. Sadly, Hafina passed away during an operation to remove one of her eyes on Dember 9th 2011.
Telyn was Taffy's rescue born last daughter, the only girl in a litter of four, born on June 28th 2009. Her name means "harp" in Welsh because she had an ear splitting wheek and a tendency of not being able to shut up whenever she was excited. Telyn was right at the heart of the Tribe and literally grew up with it. She sadly passed away from sudden heart failure shortly after her second birthday on 14th July 2011.
Llewelyn has been with me since October 2007 when he was about 12 months old. A proper patriarch with half an ear missing! He was rescued from sharing a run with chickens and rabbits in Midwales and it took over a year to work past his trigger happy survival instincts. His name is pronounced "thkloo-EH-len". He was a devoted husboar to his much beloved Dizzy. After her passing, I couldn't have built the Tribe into the close knit group that it has become without his leadership. He sadly passed away on February 5th 2011 from cancer.
Ffion (="foxglove", pronounced FEE-on) was a girl with a difference; a bold explorer and roamer who didn't mind being cuddled wherever she was - as long as she could scrounge a treat off you!!! She was given to me in March 2010 by a rescue after Fflur died and we chose her name in memory of Fflur. Sadly, Ffion's heart suddenly gave out on August 12th 2010 during a vet visit, leaving us all shocked and very confused.
Fflur (pronounced "Fleer", previous Flower) came to me in January 2010. She was a very sweet natured four year old lady, who had been handed into rescue on January 2nd after her sister had died over the holidays. Fflur had seven very happy weeks with the Tribe. Unfortunately, she never woke up from a necessary operation on March 8th 2010.
Feisty Dizzy (previous Daisy) adopted herself to Minx and myself in March 2007. She was exactly the same age as her equally bereaved new friend and was a very loving companion. After Minx died, she fell for young Llewelyn's determined charms and they had a very loving and devoted "marriage". Dizzy never gave up her attempts to get her human slaves to do what SHE wanted them to do. Dizzy left us on July 9th 2009, aged five.
Minx, my first adult piggy who sparked it all off, was and still is my most special piggy - she was more like a mini dog that followed me all around the house and garden. She loved exploring (including sneaking up the stairs) and challenging me at every turn! That included two surprise babies, which I sadly couldn't keep due to circumstances. Minx was with me from July 2004 until she lost her long, brave battle with chronic cystitis and recurring bladder stones on October 19th 2007.
Mischief was Minx' companion. She was a tiny, underweight slip of a piggy when I got her. Missy developed into a full blown operatic diva with a voice to match her flair for the dramatic. Sadly, she developed cataracts on both eyes, but that didn't slow her down for long. She died on March 19th 2007.
