Unfortunately, there's no change

Is she still on the medication? Maybe the vet could try adding another antibiotic, to see if that helps.

She's on baytril and pred still. Not sure what to think. There hasn't been any change, but this morning when I was cleaning her up - she gets pee on herself - she sat forward and looked at me and she hasn't done that at all up to this point. I put on down on all fours to see if she could stay up by herself, but she flopped right over.
The vet said if she wasn't improving by today, it would probably be time to put her down, but I'm wondering if I should wait a day or two. The fact that she sat up and looked at me makes me want to wait...

So sorry to hear there's no improvement. I wish I knew something about rats and could help. Have you tried The Rat Forum? I don't know about the members, but most forum members are willing to help with sick animals. Good luck. I really hope you're reading the signs of improvement right. Hugs

She's alert and holding her head up and trying to move around!! Fingers crossed that she really is getting better and not just temporary rallying due to the pred. Oh, I'm so excited!

Mocha and I thank you all for the good vibes She's still doing better tonight. Anaira, think I should still keep her separated from the other girls? I haven't wanted them to get sick or to stress her out if they're wrestling around her, etc.

You had her separated? Why? Usually I leave them in together, they've been exposed to the same germs anyway. And they usually aren't rough with sick friends, but if they are too boisterous, I'd put the quietest/one she gets on with best in with her. They tend to get more depressed if they're alone.

The vet said to keep her separate so the others wouldn't catch pneumonia also. I figured they'd already been exposed, but she said to keep them separate anyway. I worried about her being lonely, but she's been so out of it I don't know if she even realized. Geez, hope I didn't make it worse for her.

My understanding of pneumonia is that, while spreading the virus or bacteria doesn't cause pneumonia in the other pigs, it can cause URIs. I think it's about the level of work you want to do, such as tending to one sick pig separately, or a herd of pigs on ABs. There is a contagious period, though, and after that, it shouldn't matter. I don't know what that period is for ratties, but hope it's short So glad she seems to be improving, slow is okay as long as it's constant!

Some vets do recommend that, but if they haven't caught anything yet, it's not likely they will. I personally make sure they have companions.

I would not advise reintroduction until a week after recovery. It's not only about point of exposure - potential for infection is also dependent on pathogen load, ie the more bugs the others are exposed to, the more likely they are to become infected. That's why we usually recommend separation even after initial exposure in order to minimise the risk of this occurring.
