I jumped right in again and got 2 rattie girls today who are 2 months. I've always wanted a Siamese rat, but they're hard to find here. There just happened to be a lady who had a litter and posted on Craigslist. I was only going to get one, to keep my number at three rats but didn't want to take a baby away from its family and have it in quarantine by itself for 3 weeks, so we now have 2 new girls. One is a regular Siamese and the other's a dumbo Siamese - best of both worlds! ;D The kids named them Camille and Lexi. Their noses aren't very dark yet; they will get darker as they grow. Camille Lexi On another note, Bella (my other dumbo) has to have a mammary tumor removed tomorrow, so fingers crossed all goes well.

Bella is doing great!! The little stinker ripped a suture out while still at the vet's, but has been good since being home. The babies are just the sweetest little things! I can't wait until they can meet the big girls!

Aw, glad Bella is doing great! Best place to rip out a suture, if she's going to do that!

Intros between the babies and Rory and Bella went well, which is to be expected, so all are together in the main cage. As far as I can tell, things are going well, with all snuggled together, etc.
This morning, though, I heard my son hollering at Bella to stop. He came running downstairs and said she was dragging Lexi (one of the babies) by the ear and took her under the fleece on the bottom level. Of course I ran up to see what was going on and they were both there under the fleece, but Lexi didn't seem bothered or upset, so I guess it's all okay. I know rats can be rough with each other and I haven't seen or heard anything else going on, so maybe it was just a case of the older saying to the younger, "No, I want you here!"

It's hard not to impose our social constraints on them. They have their own ways of doing things. It may seem mean or nasty to us, but it seems to work for them. I've accepted that the pigs can be acceptably mean to each other, and only step in when I see it becoming a problem. Hard to put up with it sometimes, though. I'm really glad your son is learning these things and cares about the animals

Little question, I now have 9 piggies. Am I better keeping them together or 6 and the three babies (12wks). Babies are so scared they are in a separate hutch for the moment?

Are they all the same sex? Females can get pregnant as early as 4 weeks, so you don't want to mix female babies with intact males. Also, if the babies are male or are going in with males, you can run into problems with them getting along and fighting over females. Deciding on whether to put the 3 babies in with the 6 adults will depend on the sex of all, how long you've had the babies (quarantine is important) and how much room you have if you're going to put 9 pigs all together. Having 9 in one cage will require a big cage!

Yes we had our Huge garden run out today for the first time. Only put 7 in at the moment (got another rescue one last weekend), they were out for an hour as it didn't stay so warm. The three babies are still too scared, we're handling them everyday and chating to them but not out in any run yet, just their hutch. When the weather improves I thought of sectioning off part of the big run so that the new babies can see the adults through the mesh and gradually get use to them. All my guineapigs are females except for one neutered male, Ted. My plan was to have two groups of 5, in separate cages and runs but my 2nd baby boy sadly died after neutering. I'm too scared to go through that at the moment again, so Ted my male now has lots of lady friends! During the winter my piggies stay in the shed, their hutches are all joined together to make one large hutch with an extra corner where they've been joined. it fills two sides of the shed. We also have a large run on the floor where they exercise daily but they are needing to be outside now, so lets hope the weather starts to improve. I promise to get photos soon. X the three baby's have a separate hutch as although the main hutch is fine for 7, it would never do for 10! My hubby will extend the babies hutch for next winter so they too will have more room when they're older and bigger x

I've been watching all the dog walkers out with their dogs, all finally enjoying some sun with a bit of warmth and no snow. Just opening a door or letting sun in a window to a shed is not the same, is it!

Very sorry to hear about Mocha. x
Glad that Bella recovered well from her op and hope that the introductions have continued to go well (the babies are gorgeous!). I can see why your son was a little startled by the ear dragging - animals just don't do things the same way as us, do they!
I think we are definitely due some more pictures of them now please!
