Bella and Rory say thanks for the welcome! They're settling in well. Rory's a curious little thing and Bella's still shy and reserved, but is getting used to us. There was a bit of squabbling this morning; Bella was going after Rory a little, but I think they're sorting out the dominance issue since they're new to each other. My kids are facinated with them, especially McKenna. She wants to hold them all the time. The ratties really like sniffing noses with the dogs, they're not scared at all.

Aw, they are adorable. Don't you love the name discussions, lol! Kids have their ideas, that's for sure. I'm glad Rory and Bella have a great forever home!!!

Rory continues to get more comfortable and loves to say hi when we're near her. Bella's still very timid and hides a lot. They aren't quite sure what to make of play time outside the cage yet. Rory will explore a bit and then run back in the cage. Bella's only come out of the cage once on her own; I usually have to get her out. Rory peeking out of the tunnel. Bella trying a piece of Life cereal. "How do I get back in?!" "Maybe I'm safe in here!"

Cuuuute! Love the cracker one! A good way to deal with timid rats is to force bond; so snuggling her inside your sweater, where she can't get away from you, but is safe from the rest of the world.

I like the fact that they are so affectionate, I have never heard of a ratty mummy having behaviour problems - quite the reverse.

They're great pets, Jo. I thought my son would be the one who would take to them, and he has, but my daughter really, really likes them.

Bella's still scared as can be. I think she's just going to take a long time to come around, if she ever does. Rory's turned into a little stalker if she thinks I have treats for her, lol. She quickly figured out that when I get them out for play time I bring treats and she always wants more and will climb all over me to see if I'm hiding them somewhere. Yesterday she kept following me, trying to climb up my leg. When I would pick her up, she'd start her food search all over again, like she just couldn't believe I wasn't hiding more treats for her somewhere.
The girls have made the tunnel their bed and the house is now only for food storage. The bedding I have on the bottom level is a soft granule blend. The bigger balls look like their food, so there's always a nice pile of those in the house, too. The first time I lifted the house and saw everything in there I had to laugh. Cubby (our hamster) stores food, but for some reason the rattie house filled with food struck me as funny.
The kids and I are going to try to make a maze of boxes and tunnels this week, so I'll post some pics if I can get some good ones.

I love the mazes, and that last picture is adorable!!! I think we should change the phrase "greatest thing since sliced bread" to "greatest thing since cardboard boxes." They can be everything from lofts and houses, to mazes and hay holders, with a whole lot of being happily chewed in between!!!

You're right, 3piggles, boxes are fantastic!! The cage I have for the rats right now is plenty big enough for the 2 of them, but it just isn't working for me. I've gotten so spoiled by being able to redo the grids on the pigs' cage if I'm not happy with it! I decided to order them the Critter Nation cage and was just going to get the single unit and then add the double maybe this summer. Well, I found a site where both pieces were on sale, so I went ahead and got the whole thing. Since it's so much bigger than the cage I have now, I thought I'd check Petfinder on the off-chance their might be a rattie for adoption and sure enough, there was one little girl needing a home. She had been brought into the Humane Society with 3 males, all housed in the same cage, so she's been on pregnancy watch, but was cleared yesterday so I picked her up. Right now I have her in her own cage, right next to Rory and Bella so they can sniff each other through the bars. When the new cage comes in and I put it together, I'll put all three in so it's new for all of them. We named her Mocha since her little face looks like it's been dipped in chocolate. She's very sweet and energetic and will be a good playmate for Rory and Bella, but especially Rory since she's much more active and curious then little dumbo Bella. Here are a few pics of Mocha:
