Yesterday morning started like any normal morning: 6 am puppy potty time wake up - Let Zuul and Indy out...Mushka sleeps in. go back to bed 6:30 am real wake up/get ready for work 7:00 am feed the dogs 7:05 am let all dogs out
When I woke up I thought it was odd that Mu was sleeping on the floor at the foot of the bed, and not on her soft bed. She was curled up and looked a bit twisted, but she always contorts herself into odd shapes, I pet her and straightened her out laying on her side. I went downstairs to feed the dogs and Indy and Zuul (as always) were ready to scarf it all up. I called for Mushka, but she did not come. She usually trots herself down in time for her bowl to be filled. I went back upstairs stood in the doorway to the bedroom and told her to get her lazy butt up, she attempted to stand up and fell over. I ran over to her to see what was wrong. She could not use her legs, all four legs were not working. Indy slipped a disk back in 07, so I thought she injured herself. I attempted to stand her up so I could check her spine, she couldn't hold any of her weight. I picked her up, carried her downstairs and laid her on a soft dog bed and called the Vet...
She has been hospitalized - they don't know what is wrong. She seems to be fine, no temp, no pain, no issues with her eyes, just legs not working. They think she may have an issue inside her spine. She is being treated with steroids, fluids and rest.

Its been a very difficult week, Mushka has made some progress - she is able to crawl and is trying to sit up on her own.

Mu's wheels I use her wheels for long walks, or if her legs keep going out (as if she was on ice) she gets strapped in for balance. Mu is able to walk on her own - she gets better at it every day. She is still having issues dragging her back toes - some days are better than others. She can go up and down the stairs...and is smart enough to know when to stop and rest.

She is making such wonderful progress. Her facial expression says it all! I think her wheelchair gave her hope!

That's great Mushka is improving so much! Did the vet actually diagnose what the problem was, or is it just 'one of those things'? The wheels are great - it must do marvellous good to keep her in an upright position for some time each day, to help her body remember what to do. Hope the improvements continue.

I have not had any contact with the vet in a long time, I think that they were surprised to hear she was better. I know the Neurologist wanted to do a follow up...if she survived. But I don't think she needs any tests or expensive treatment. She has recovered so much more on her own than she did when she was hospitalized at the vets. I feel the vets diagnosis was grim, and they did not expect her to recover - so I am a little miffed at them. Her recovery is not what I would call "full" she has about 87% of her abilities back, and some days are better than others. She played ball the other day!!! Mushka is my racing dog, fast, light and agile on her feet like a gazell. She had won agility contests back in the day and running lightning fast after a ball is her favorite thing to do...but sadly those days are long gone. I'm just happy to have her standing up on her feet again - we have not tried going for a walk, that may be too much for her just yet - her wheels may be needed for any long "walks". Thanks for all the well wishes - I think she heard each and every on of them!

I don't think animals do much better in hospitals than people do, and am not at all surprised she's recovering so well at home. Just so glad she has improved so much, and has the chance of recovering even more. If she needs her wheels for long walks, at least she can accompany everyone else. So much better than the original prognosis!

Oh wow, only just caught up on this! I'm glad Mu's doing better, and her wheels look awesome. This is partly what I would like to eventually branch of into, and study; biomedical engineering, designing things like pet wheelchairs, prosthetic parts, and all those interesting kind of things.

I hope you do go into that discipline, Anaira! The animals need your enthusiasm for what can be done to help them!

Yeah, well sadly it isn't offered in my city; best I can do is finish the three year mechanical degree I've started, and hopefully maybe by then I'll be in a position to move to another city, and pick it up; it should all cross credit so I only have to do another one, or maybe two years of study, instead of the four it usually is, and then I'll have two sets of letters next to my name; but even if I don't, apparently it isn't hard to get into biomedical engineering jobs just with a mechanical major. Just involves a bit of extra training. Ok, sorry for the take over Jeannine! ;P Hope Mu's doing better now? It really is incredible how they recover when vets don't really know what to do. Hope she keeps fighting. <3
