I have good news to report. On Saturday I cleaned Hogwarts and gave Weasley a Vaposteam treatment. I also changed the boys to a 100% of the Oxbow food for young guinea pigs. That means that they have been totally converted to the SmallPetSelect hay and the Oxbow food that you all recommended since Saturday. Plus I have completely stopped giving both Weasley and Harry corn. As of this morning, Weasley is not congested. This is the longest he has gone without congestion (Saturday after treatment till now). I'm starting to think that in addition to corn that he is allergic to the other kibbles that I'd been giving him. Thank you all again for your suggestions in changing his food and hay. I'm hoping the days of his allergies are over.

This all sounds very promising - it must be such a relief for you to see him relieved of his symptoms. Let's hope it was just food allergies you have now got to the bottom of - great detective work!

Thanks everyone!
I did some research and found corn was a major ingredient in the kibble that I had been giving them. No wonder he has had allergies since I've had him.
Least to say, Oxbow has already proven itself worth the extra money since it is corn free.

I was a typical first time piggy mom, buying all the cool looking stuff they really shouldn't have, the C additive for the drinking water and the pellets with all the pretty colored bits in them. Then I joined my first forum and found how far off I was, learned about C&C cages which of course, pet stores never tell us, learned about Oxbow and a whole lot of other things. It was an amazing eye opener. I cut out all the bad stuff, printed a copy of the Guinealynx fruit and veggie chart, created a piggy pharmacy to have the basics I needed in case of an emergency, and did a complete 360. I've calmed down a lot since then, lol Now, I have all the basics. I use the best as it takes less so doesn't cost that much more. Now I enjoy the piggles. Sort of like how new moms react to the first baby versus the third One thing I do swear by is my cavy medical book. Not because I think my pigs have all those illnesses and conditions, but because it's eye opening to know exactly how bad the situation can get. Also, it the repository for all the medical info and advice I've gotten from friends over the years. That's where I have my allergy med doses, etc., and it's all in one place. Sad that when my beautiful Zippy was dying, the only vet who was open to see him knew nothing about guinea pigs, and was referring to the exact same book right in front of me At least I know it's a good book.

3piggles, Thanks for sharing. It feels good to not being alone. What cavy medical book are you referring to?

Handbook of Rodent and Rabbit Medicine, by Kathy Laber-Laird, M. Michael Swindle and Paul Fkecknel. Pergamon publishers.
Great basic medical info on most rodents and rabbits.

Hubby was wondering what you thought of the book "Diseases of Domestic Guinea Pigs" by V. C. G. Richardson

I have that one (or did have, haven't seen it for years!) - it's a great book, lots of very useful info.
Of course all text books will be updated as we learn more about medicines, doses and interactions. But they're a great starting point and if you have an older edition you can always check if the guidelines have changed with knowledgeable folk online.

At the time I bought my medical book, I could only afford one book, though there were several that sounded really good. I really like the charts in this book, everything in one place. It is a medical textbook/reference, so I've had to look up endless words over the years, but the charts are great.

SiLamb...How has Weasley been doing? Is his congestion/allergies staying away? Hope he's still doing well!

Yesterday I noticed Weasley has a red bump on his backside. Any ideas as to what this is? If looks like those vascular bumps people get as they age. Weasley is doing well but still requires a periodic Vicks Vaposteam. This last time I switched to the pharmacy brand of vaposteam and it works just as well I think. I'm still testing it though. I did notice figure out why the boys wouldn't eat the hay and food after a vaposteam treatment. I'm pretty sure it was because it had too high of a ratio of vaposteam to water ratio. I think I had miscalculated that first time. I'm still testing this theory though. Attachments:

Not sure what it is - does it feel solid or squishy? There's what looks like a tiny wound or dimple in it which could indicate a bit of hay poke or something - or maybe a cyst? I'm sure you will be keeping an eye on it for any changes.
Glad Weasley is doing well - sure it won't be long before you have finished fine tuning his treatment.

I have no idea what the bump is. Treen asked the questions I would ask. Check www.guineslynx.com/cysts. Not sure why, but I thought cysts were clearer? It does look like those spots old people get. Keep us posted.
