Something else has eclipsed the true meaning of the holiday and I find that particularly sad in the case of Martin Luther King.

We've got snow! Only a couple of centimetres, but the kids are excited and will be out in it shortly!
I had a tidy up day in the garden and shed yesterday - glad I hadn't planned it for today!

I remember waking up to snow before Christmas when I was child and that excited feeling I used to get in my tummy. I remember forbidden to play snowballs on the way to school but coming home it was ok. It is a good job you got that task out of the way Bean love, that is why I never put off until tomorrow etc....things have a way of catching you out

We've had a pathetic excuse for a snowy winter, especially after last year with our 5 feet or more. We got snow instead of rain yesterday, and snow moving in overnight into tomorrow, but again, 1-3 inches. Just enough to mess up the commute, but not enough to do much. I did promise our member, Wheekies, I would build her a snowman and post a picture on Facebook, if we got snowman snow I loved waking up to snow as a child, and I still love watching it snow, and even clearing it if it's not too heavy. I've always lived where it snows, so it seems wrong when it doesn't snow. We have a great sledding hill right at the end of our little group of condos, and the kids finally have enough of a covering of snow to use the saucers they got for Christmas. I don't know if any of you watched the TV series Andromda, but they used to jump their ships to warp speed, and supposedly stars were flying past them so quickly, but it looked just like driving into a snow fall at night. I love that effect, even if it means the roads are getting slippery I also think one of the most calming sights is watching snow falling in front of a street lamp, at night. Hehe, can you tell I'm a winter person

Hehe, can you tell I'm a winter person I used to think that myself, when I was much younger and my parents did the driving! Now I'm older, and can't stand snow- partly because I have to shovel it, and it's starting to get a little harder to do at my age- and also because how hazardous it is to drive in it. But truthfully, once the snow has finished falling and it's all plowed & shoveled out of the way, it's a wondrous sight. I always enjoyed driving around/walking around near the forests where everything has settled and looks peaceful.

I always worried about the driving, and hated the shoveling. We bought an electric shovel last year, as we're getting way too old to shovel heavy, wet snow. It's been wonderful. It only clears about a foot-wide swath at a time, but living in a condo, we have no place to store a snow blower. Clearing the snow off the cars is the hardest part, as I'm too short to reach the roof of my car, so hubby has to do it. I'm sure we'll get a nasty snow before the winter is over, but so far it's been pretty mild.
Spades, is that in Celsius? We're holding at 24 degrees F right now, and dipping down to the single digits F over night. It's only for a couple of days, then back up to the 30s F. Do you get much snow where you live?

That's Celsius. Actually I don't mind the cold. I prefer that to the heat. My wife comes from north China and there it's really cold Minus 10 is like T-shirt weather

Handy conversion chart. °C to °F Multiply by 9, then divide by 5, then add 32 °F to °C Deduct 32, then multiply by 5, then divide by 9

I have a handy chart by my computer, but it starts at 0 Thanks for the chart It doesn't usually get as cold here as it does in other parts of the US, though we've had years when winter temps dipped into the minus digits F, and stayed there long enough to stop vehicles from starting. Generally that's rare, and except for the polar vortex periods, our temperatures are above 0 F.

I prefer the cold to the heat too Spades hun. We live in the South West so the cold does not affect us as it does those who live in the north. Being a peninsula it tends to be wetter than most most and whilst it is a favourite for holiday makers, it is a real gamble with the weather when they are here.

Apparently we have a major snow coming in over the weekend, though we're back to all the speghetti models giving different readings on where it's going to go and when. We're at the "IF" point; if it goes here we get this much, if it goes there we get that much. So we may get a foot of snow or a dusting. I'm sure the models will come together better as we get closer to the storm. NYC and the east coast is going to get a lot of snow. The Appalachian mountains could get 3 feet, but that's like the heart of the storm. The rest of us aren't getting anywhere nearly that much. Since it's January, and we still have grass spots in our little bit of snow, it would be nice to at least cover the grass spots. Temps are supposed to gradually warm this week, that only a few degrees per day and with blustery winds. I didn't get out for my walk yesterday, but I will today. Even with the windchill factor, it will be warm enough to get out. I also have to buy bird seed, so a trip the feed/grain store is in order. Our bird feeders are full, but there's nothing left for the ground feeders. I can only take so many plaintive little squirrel buddies looking in my door or slider before I have to give them more food

Oh Piggles love, I hope your squirrels arrive soon. I love watching birdies at the feeders and watching the ones eat what falls onto the ground. It is bitterly cold here today.

We've been putting out more seed and fat balls for the birds that can't get anything out of the frozen ground. The feeders aren't emptying as quickly as usual, but we're not as consistent at keeping them topped up as next door are (he gets loads of beautiful birds), so we know they're getting fed either way!
Our road was really icy this morning - didn't notice until we all started skidding around! The kids found it hilarious and were disappointed the whole route to school wasn't skiddy - not me though! I don't know why our road is always so bad - it seems to run a few degrees colder than the surrounding streets!
Any clues about your signature, Spades/ Shades?! I tried google translate which gave me a gist it was to do with temperatures, but made little sense beyond that!

Slippery roads and sidewalks are the downside of the cold I love so much. To bad the kids couldn't slide all the way to school. Oh, the stories they would have had to tell all day Those were my favorite school days, as a young child (not once I got too cool to be falling on my tuckus ) Back then, the school bus would slide to a stop where ever it could, and we'd run to meet it, sliding all over the place Now, school gets cancelled. Our top front step was super slippery yesterday. The sun was hot enough to melt the snow on the roof, which dripped onto the cold concrete landing and froze. I put a lot of salt on it, even if just for some traction to get in and out of the door. I got the peanuts, so we'll just have to clean up the mess come spring The squirrels and the big birds will be thrilled

It looks like you're still forecast to be north of the storm, 3piggles? We've had clips on our news of everyone clearing the supermarkets around Washington D.C. Hope all our members there stay safe and warm!
I went out this morning pleased the forecast heavy rain hadn't hit. But I had a few errands to run and when I'd finished them, the skies had opened and I got thoroughly soaked walking home! I don't think it's due to keep up for too long - I hope not as I was down where all the flooding happened after Christmas and there are still loads of businesses that aren't back on their feet yet, so another flood would be awful.

We'll get a dusting of snow at best, but south of us and coastal areas are going to get a lot of snow. The storm seems to keep tracking further out to sea by the time it gets to us, but it's going to clobber the eastern seaboard/mid-Atlantic region. Sorry you got soaked. You walk everywhere. Here, people drive everywhere, and fight over the parking spaces closest to the store, lol. Carrying an umbrella in the car is too much trouble, especially if the wind is really whipping the rain around and trying to steal the umbrellas. We have Tilley hats ( www.tilley.com/us_en/to55-orbit.html ) which have a chin strap and stay on through any weather. Had them for years, and with a waterproof coat, we stay pretty dry. Another cold, blustery day, which is unusual, as we've had a whole blustery week. Usually we have a day or two, so we've had fronts moving through all week, but no appreciable snow.
