Jo, I'm glad you're doing better. I'm also very glad your pets are in excellent hands; I was worried that some well-meaning but random idiot could have ended up caring for your guys. (I hope this makes you laugh.)

Ha! Naughty Baz!
Really hope your physio is able to help you, Jo. It must be so hard to get your mobility back given the problems you already had with moving around and pain before the fall. I'm sure you will work hard and that it will pay off and get your more comfortable and mobile.
It's lovely to have you back on, and hopefully as you start feeling better, we'll see more of you. Take care Jo. xx

It's great to hear you sounding so positive. I'm so sorry you had such a rotten year, and that the turn about had to happen with health scares and problems. I really hope you and Paul can work out a great way to get more fit, and really turn the year around. Lots of hugs

Ha ha yes naughty boy Baz, I don't like to think of cockroaches being squashed although I know I am in the minority. Thanks so much for your good wishes. No, I wouldn't ask anyone else to look after them unless I really thought they knew what they were doing. They aren't getting quite the care they would from me but I intend to do something about that as soon as I possibly can.
Thank you Bean darling, I am feeling quite positive. I want to walk again no matter how long it takes. I know I will always need a stick but I can easily live with that. If I had been fit and pain free before my accident, I would be more than half way there. Thank you for saying it is lovely to have me back, it is great to be back amongst dear friends.
Thank you Piggles hunni. I hope we both get much fitter but at least he has lost a lot of weight so he is feeling better because of that alone. I just hope I manage to do the same. Will keep you posted.
Lots of love Jo xxx

Weight loss is a good thing. I bet he feels a whole lot better. It's a great motivator to keep working on his health. I hope you're up and about really soon, and you manage to lose some of the weight you want to lose, too I wouldn't squash a cockroach, though I would definitely use a regular trap. I don't think Have-a-heart makes cockroach traps

That's great that Paul is losing weight, and I hope whatever he's doing works for you too (if you're trying to lose weight the same way!). It'll be much easier if you can do it together and egg each other on when you feel like inhaling a packet of biscuits!
I don't think anyone could take care of our beasties exactly the same as we do, but as long as they're all clean and fed and you know they're safe, you can at least relax a bit. It sounds like good motivation for your physio anyway - if things get tough, imagining yourself seeing to all your animals might pull you through for a few seconds longer each time. xx

Thank you ladies for more wonderful messages and I feel stronger today. Last night I stayed up and watched a film with Paul and sat in a cosy chair but more importantly, I was able to get out of it again with no trouble. That made me very happy indeed. The nurse came today to take the dressing off the wound and left it off so all I am doing now is waiting for the physio to phone. We are working on Paul's health as he has been told: No Maacdonalds, no fish and chips, no potatoes, no choc etc. I thought or goodness sake, the lad has to live a little. I think in moderation and it will be OK. Me I am on a total ban because I have a lot of weight to lose.
Critters all seem fine, have to instruct Paul tonight on making up hermies treated water but that won't be hard. Still worried about the snailies though, this lady i supposed to be collecting them and as they are growing they are getting seriously over crowded and I have lost four small ones. It is a frustrating situation.
Anyway, will report again very soon.
Lots of love Jo xxx

Great news about the dressing being off and you being able to get in and out of your comfy chair. You must appreciate being able to do those little things yourself again so very much.
It sounds like Paul's diet is in for some major changes. Will he find it easier to do a total diet change to start with so he can retrain his taste buds and get into the new way of eating? And when he knows he can do it, allow himself little treats. Or will he find it too hard to cut out so many things he usually enjoys? He's got good motivation with the health scare, but it's still really tough to make such massive changes, so lots of luck to him. I think it's great you can do it together. That'll help so much in terms of what you have in the house and also the support you can give each other when you're tempted to lapse.
I hope the lady comes for your snails soon, so you don't have to worry about them being overcrowded. Did you arrange a date or are you waiting to hear from her?

Wow, that's great news about being about being able to get out of the comfy chair by yourself! I hope the physio has some good news for you, now that the bandage is off Perhaps, if Paul can't eat what he used to eat, and you want to lose weight with him, it's time for a new recipe book of tasty healthy recipes. I find I need a real mood boost when things like that happens, and a great batch of new recipes just makes me feel as if that diet change goal is attainable. Might also let you and Paul sort through the recipes, and find ones you'd really like to try. So much better than just wanting everything you can't have. I should think it's still okay to eat a lot of the Indian and Chinese food, as a lot of that is lite and full of vegetables. Even the seafood dishes are probably okay, if you like them. Anyway, I hope you two find lots of great new foods to eat, and get to enjoy the new meals together Poor snaileys are probably missing you. I hope the lady arrives to get them, soon. Lots of hugs

Don't be fooled by the vegetables Chinese cooking involves lots of oils, sugar and other nasty things, especially in takeaway food. My wife's mother has food sliding off the plate... Our kitchen is more European, of course

No Maacdonalds, no fish and chips, no potatoes, no choc etc. I thought or goodness sake, the lad has to live a little. I think in moderation and it will be OK. When I had kidneystones back in 2009 I had to go on a strict diet which meant no more chocolates, no nuts, no leafy green vegetables, no tea, no barbecue sauce, the list was extensive. I had to radically alter my meals, and although I've been pain free ever since- I still miss everything I can't have. (I still sneak an occasional piece of chocolate two or three times a year.)

Thanks Bean hun, I managed to get out of it last night too so it wasn't a lucky one off LOL. Paul's will power isn't very good so it is going to be a bit of a struggle. He does like his little treats. He has given up the booze and that is the main thing. It is good that we can do it together and support each other and I have said that when I am better we will take it in turns to make dinner at night. I too hope she comes for the snailies soon love, I am very worried about them.
Yes Piggles love, tasty healthy recipes on the menu I have must look in my cookbooks when I am feeling a little better. It is easy for me at the moment because I don't want to eat and I really hope I don't get my appetite back. I hope we get to enjoy healthy eating together too, I just wish we liked these healthy spreads like Benecol but they taste dreadful. I love indian and chinese and will cook some of my own dishes when I am able. I think my snailies may be missing me love them, we are gong to grit our teeth and give them a thorough clean out tomorrow, I think it is going to be very hard for me.
Oh Baz hun, I am so sorry for you. I will have some choc at christmas and will try and avoid it at all other times.
I have heard that before Shades sweetie but I still enjoy them.
That's me done for now friends, chat soon.
Lots of love Jo xxxx

I totally gave up on those healthy spreads. They replace the butter with veggie oil, so I just went with the veggie oil, olive oil, as often as possible, and skip those spreads. Instead of toasting bread and using the spreads, I lightly fry the bread in olive oil and spices, sometimes add a slice of cheese, tomato, basil or whatever we want. I use a fiber powder I get from Walmart, but there are many fiber powders, and they are great for making you feel full. They take up space in your stomach, so you don't get as hungry as you would on an empty stomach. Many of the fiber supplements are gluten free, and as I have trouble with the gluten ones, that's a good option for me. They dissolve in hot or cold liquids, so you can just add it to your tea or coffee, put it on cereal, etc. Not only does it help with regularity, but it helps reduce the appetite I hope Paul can stick to his diet. It is really hard to give up foods and drinks we really love, but when it's a matter of health, not just choice, it helps to have something just as good to replace those favorites. I hope you two can find a great new set of favorites

I didn't like the taste of them Piggles love so I have a very thin layer of ordinary, the bread in spice sounds yummy. The sound of adding the fibre to the coffee is great because I don't like them as plain drinks. I know they sell those where we shop so I will ask Paul to get me some. The one the doctor has given me has been making me sick for months so I have just stopped taking it. It isn't a fibre drink but Laxido, and it is dreadful.
I hope Paul can stick to his diet hun, unfortunately I cannot make him so I am just gently advising and hoping for the best. Here's to new favourites hunting.
Chat soon my friend.

Paul's done so well to give up booze if he was drinking regularly before - lots of will power there, so hopefully he can harness that for the dietary changes too. It must seem like so many massive changes, and so many of the things he loves walking out the door, so it's not surprising he's finding it hard.
Why haven't you got much of an appetite, Jo? I hope it's not because of the pain and that you're managing to eat what you need to keep you healthy, even if you're not feeling like big meals.
Take care Jo, hope this week brings some welcome recovery. xx

You'll have some major support from his doctors, and if the doctors approve the dietary changes you make, that gives you even more support. I would definitely start by checking the different Indian and Chinese foods you both like the best, and continuing to eat the ones that you really like, and that fit the new diet requirements. I found I could suffer through almost any diet, as long as I got some Chinese food periodically When Vic was diagnosed as borderline diabetic, his doctor and the nutritionist gave blanket diet changes-no white foods, no sugar, etc. I even checked the best online medical sites(Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins), and they were also blanket in what he couldn't eat. I think most medical people assume their patients are idiots, and give us the 4-year-old "you just can't eat any of it" approach. I spent several months searching for a website that actually explained the chemical responses to the foods, so I understood why he couldn't eat certain foods. I finally found one in Canada. Great site! Turns out he can eat all sorts of things he was told he couldn't eat, depending on what they're mixed with to counter the effects (add a lot more fiber, you can eat a lot more carbohydrates), or depending on the type of sugars or carbohydrates they had. It may turn out that Paul can still have a lot of what he likes, just not the MacDonald's or Fish and Chips version. Tell him not to despair. You have a lot of options

Thanks Bean hunni and yes, I think he is having a bit of a struggle even though he has had a couple of lapses. Not going to say anything, he must do it in his own way. I am afraid my appetite has all but come back so I have having to put the brakes on. No urge to eat choc but I had a sandwich for lunch and am having chicken for dinner (no chips or anything) so I am hopingfor the .
LIke me Piggles love, I love a take away but finances dictate that we cannot have them too often so when we do we feel it is a real treat. I agree, to get you through a diet you have to have the odd lapse or you would binge in the end, I probably would anyway. Different websites do tell you different things and as you say hun, as long as he keeps off McDonalds, there are other foods he can have which he has been told are banned, and probably more often than he thought. It is hard to know who to follow as there is so much conflicting advice. I don't think doctors should rule out things all together either and tell the patient that it is banned, for one thing I think it sometimes makes the food more appealing!
Physio came on Friday and assessed me and said that there was a report on breathing problems during the night, from the hospital. She said that this could affect stamina and performance throughout the day and it will be easier to assess properly once I have been for my breathing assessment on the 10th August. She has given me some lie down exercises to do (I wish lol!) but says I am not ready for stand up ones yet and I must still rely on both hands and use my trolley. She is popping back next week to see how I am.
Thank you my dear friends for your kind messages and advice. love you.
Hugs Jo xx

I hope the breathing assessment gives you a clean bill of health I'm better at lie down exercises, too. My balance was never very good, and it's gotten worse with age. I won't be doing yoga, lol I can do stand up exercises, if I have something to hold onto. Sort of defeats the purpose of exercising, lol I think banning a food absolutely makes us want it that much more. That's why I prefer to cut down on it, rather than eliminate it completely. I had lapses in my diet, and most diet plans say that's normal. I figure if I used to eat 2K calories per day, and I cut down to 1500, I'm headed in the right direction The doctor really needs to explain to both of you why he imposed those food restrictions on Paul. That's not only the only way for the two of you to understand the extent of the health situation, but it gives you a chance to ask questions about alternatives to some of the foods, or about moderating rather than completely eliminating those foods. I hope the doctor will give you a chance to do that. You sound much better, much more upbeat than before. Love hearing you sound that way Get better

Hope the lying down exercises help get you more mobility and it's not long before you're progressing to the next set and being able to move about more.
At least if you're both doing the healthy eating, you can keep the cupboards free of the things that you're trying to eat less of, so you don't end up eating them without really thinking about it - if you have to make an effort to go out to have something, sometimes you end up going for something else you already have in instead. It'll be much easier when you're both a bit better and can cook more though. Big dietary changes take a lot of thought and effort and all yours is going into getting moving again.
Take care Jo. xxx

So do I Piggles love but if not I will be bringing something home to help me breathe at night. Summer doesn't help of course, even with my fan on. It is my balance I am worried about really as that is what caused me to have the fall. It is all in hand though and I think I am getting some really good advice and help. I am being good and doing my exercises but they are lie down ones I cannot do the standing up ones yet. That seems a good goal love 1500k per day,. I don't think I have been having anything like that and I just wish the weight would drop off me. I think the doctor imposed those restrictions on Paul because of his organ condition. He was so poorly when he was in hos we thought we were going to lose him so I think the doctor is telling him to eat healthily so as to keep his weight down and get stronger. I don't know if the doctor did explain anything to him, I will ask.
Hi Bean love, yes, I am being good and doing my exercises and I really hope I can move on soon. The one exercise I cannot do however is the one where I have to stretch my right leg out to the side, it is too painful and I will tell her this next week. I do try though so hopefully things will start to loosen up. You are right hunni, the few things in the house which are naughty are out of reach, not that I have had much of a desire for them luckily. It will be quite fun deciding on healthy meals, I just hope Paul thinks so too as he does tend to like the naughty things, more than I when it comes to meals. You take care too darling.
Chat soon.
Lots of love Jo xxx
