I bought a couple of small wedges of brownie cheesecake, at the supermarket yesterday. They were great, as I've been having chocolate cravings, and not given in to them. The wedges were small enough that I didn't end up heat a whole cheesecake, which was also great. I like that the supermarkets do single servings, so I can buy one serving, eat that, and be done with it. I do that every few months, especially in the heat of the summer, so I don't have to bake or eat a whole batch of something.
In the winter, I tend to bake a bit, just because it helps to heat the house. Even then, though, I make bread more than cookies, etc.
I hear you about wanting the weight to fall off, Jo. I eat really healthy meals, not high in calories, but high in fiber. I don't eat a lot of sweets, though I think about eating them a lot, and I don't eat a lot of bread, although I really love bread. I also never seem to lose any weight. Maybe a pound or so here and there, but I'm not in danger of needing a new wardrobe any time soon. I've been walking an average of 2.5+ miles per day, so I'm exercising. It just doesn't seem to make much difference. Some of my regular wardrobe that has always been a bit tight isn't tight any longer, but that's about it.
Paul may need more encouragement from his doctor, which he'll get if his blood levels aren't where the doctor wants them to be at his next visit!
Are you getting something like a CPAP machine to help you breathe, or something else? Vic never had much luck with the CPAP machine, but I know a lot of people who have had great luck with it.

I'm so glad you feel like you're getting good advice and help, Jo - I hope it helps you with things you were struggling with before your fall too. The olympics are starting next month - do you think there's any chance we could get your name down for those?! Aw but I really do hope that however awful all this has been with the break, some good can come out with it in terms of you getting the help you need.
If you are having breathing problems in the night, that could really affect your energy levels and health, so if they do find any issues, I hope the solutions agree with you. I know a few people who use the CPAP machines and have much more energy as a result. Sorry hub didn't get on with them, 3piggles - is he affected much by his sleep being interrupted or not getting enough oxygen in the night?

I think those little slices sound great for a treat Piggles love, you can get similar things at certain places here but it will be a while before I visit them. I think if you have a little it stops the cravings.
Winter can sometimes be easier for dieting as there are things like stews which are thoroughly enjoyable but not bad for you. The crusty bread you have to have with them however isn't lol! I know what you are saying about weight, it just isn't fair. Paul has dropped several sizes and I just wish the same had happened to me when I was in hos. It is always easier for men to lose weight even under normal circumstances. It will be something similar to a CPAP machine and I just hope it works for me if they decide I need it. I am sorry it didn't work for hub love, is there any alternative?
Ha ha Bean no olympics this year I'm afraid love but maybe the next lol! When I see those fit people I just wish I had a fraction of their good health and energy. Yes love, I am really hoping they do decide I need one because I really want to have more energy and strength to fight this thing. It isn't only the hip, but I have had a very painful knee for some time which is giving its due. If it weren't for that I think the hip would be quite easy to manage.

Hubby had sleep apnia, which not only made him snore a lot, and very loudly, but he constantly snorted himself away, so he never got any long period of sleep. Even if he could have slept solidly for 4 hours, it would have been better than constantly waking and falling asleep, then repeating the process. Apparently, there are a lot of options for setting the levels of things on the CPAP machine. If he had tried different setting combinations, it might have worked, but the person who was coaching him decided on the settings, and they didn't work. He kept waking with a very dry mouth and throat, which on added to the reasons why he wasn't sleeping.
Once he got out of the jobs that were highly stressful, and he got a mattress and pillows that really suited his needs, his sleep patterns got better, and he stopped using the machine. He still doesn't sleep well, but most of the time he gets the restful sleep he needs. We all have bad nights. It's only a problem when every night is a bad night. If you get the CPAP machine, Jo, I hope it really helps with your sleep. Nothing like a good nights sleep to make it a whole lot easier to face the day!
Vic always lost weight easily when he dieted, too. We both drank the Slimfast drinks for breakfast, and he lost about 10-15 pounds. I didn't lose more than a pound or two.
I make a lot of soups in the winter, and we do have bread with the soup, but we limit it to one slice each. We used to have bread with pasta and sauce, but now that hubby is limited in the amount of carbohydrates he can eat, we have pasta or bread, not both. Same with rice or potatoes. We can only have one high carbohydrate food at a time. It's really helped us not gain weight, even if we're not losing weight. I did love having garlic bread with the pasta, though.

I had sleep apnoea about 15 years ago, although an oxygen test showed that although my oxygen levels were dipping throughout the night, I was waking before they got dangerously low, so they didn't do anything for me?! Anyway it turned out to be caused by a medication I'd been put on (they said it was unlikely when I asked, but as soon as I came off it, it stopped). Another reason I try to avoid any medications - the next one they tried after that led to me having asthma for the first time ever! I know there are some you need, but so many other cause more problems than they resolve.
It must be frustrating to be following the same eating plan as someone else when they get results so much quicker. Keep strong though Jo, it's all positive change and I know you can do it!

I have negative reactions to most meds, which is why I avoid them. Yes, certain health conditions require meds, but I hope to avoid those for as long as possible. Hubby was on the same meds he's on now, which are blood pressure and cholesterol meds, which may contribute to his broken sleep patterns. I'm not sure it would be wise to try skipping the meds to see if he sleeps better. I do with doctors paid more attention to side effects, instead of blowing off the idea, as if we couldn't possibly have any pertinent ideas. Glad stopping the meds stopped the sleep apnea I also think there may be a lot of seemingly insignificant factors that all add up to disturbing our sleep. Outside and inside noise such as traffic or machines that cycle on and off, smells, the comfort level of our bedding, etc., may all contribute. Hubby is a very lite sleeper, as you are. I've suggested white noise to him, several times, but he says it keeps him awake. He does sleep better when he has a fan going. He just can't regulate when he'll need a fan. Aroma therapy, white noise, room temperature and other things may play a role in our sleep patterns. It really is frustrating to diet and not accomplish anything. It may be that different people need different types of diets. I think I'd have to stop eating, if I want to lose weight. Dieting and walking aren't helping. Don't give up, Jo. You'll find the balance you need

I am sorry it made hubby snore a lot love but luckily we have separate rooms so if I do snore, I will be only be poor Holly who has to listen LOL! Paul snores which is why we had to go in separate rooms in the first place. I sympathise so much with lack of sleep but I cannot wait to get a new bed. We are really hoping this grant is gong to come through for us so we can buy one and I will try and pick one which is best suited to me. The one I have at the moment is horrid and lumpy and it is a wonder I get any sleep at all!
It is a fact, men lose weight so much more quickly than we and I wonder why, sometimes everything seems stacked in their favour doesn't it LOL?! I am hoping to be well enough to make more soups this year, you can't beat home made.
Meds can cause all sorts of problems hun but I know I have to keep taking mine at least for the time being. My upset tummy seems to have subsided at least for a while which is why I haven't been on here for a couple of days. Thanks for the encouragement Piggles love, I am doing really well. Actually eating very little but enough for my system to register that it is not starving. I just wish it would drop off me though which it isn't.
It will be interesting to see Bean hunni what my oxygen levels are but I think I am going to need some help of some sort. I have awful dreams where I am trying to complete some task and am just too exhausted to do it and then I wake up out of breath it is quite alarming. I was able to lie on my right side for the first time today without too much pain so I am quite pleased about that. It is always the side I like to start and then go over to my left. It is also my preferred side for reading books in bed and Holly's for cuddles. Thank you too for the encouragement Bean love, it is so appreciated and knowing I have friends who are with me makes a whole lot of difference.
Chat soon.
Lots of love Jo xxx

That's great news about being able to sleep on your right side, it being your preferred side. I like to sleep on my right side, but I have to keep my left neck/back muscles warm, so I flip back and forth a lot. Just a funny to give you a chuckle. I get weird dreams when I have to go to the bathroom. Just before I wake up, I've been in a WWI fox hole with a cavy friend, been on a land sailboat flying across a desert, been stuck in mud, you name it. Always I wake up, and I have to go to the bathroom I used to get freaked out when these weird dreams started, though my cavy friend, who is very, very ill, got such a hoot out of being included, I've started looking forward to what I'll be doing when I have to wake up to go to the bathroom each night I really hope you can get the oxygen flow sorted, so you don't struggle to breathe, and don't keep having nightmares wake you. Nothing like a good nights sleep, even if it's just a few solid hours uninterrupted, to help us mend.

Dreams can be peculiar things!
Last night I was living through some sort of zombie apocalypse - we were running everywhere and it got really tiring. Plus one person who was in my group made us stop so he could get some new shoes (size 7) from a looted shoe shop, and that delay could have cost us our lives!
The night before my kids were due to start a new lifesaving swimming class (which was true) and had take extra clothes to swim in (again, true). But when I got there in the dream, they told me off because I hadn't taken loads of trays of shortbread that were supposed to be packed in under their swimming costume/ trunks while they swam?! That didn't happen when they got there, although they did have to swim loads of lengths quite quickly in all their clothes, so it probably felt like it!
I'm sorry you're having dreams that tie in with the distress of not being able to breathe properly though, Jo, that must be awful. And having an uncomfortable bad is no good either. We paid out more than usual for our last mattress and am so glad we did - it makes such a difference to my quality of sleep (although it doesn't stop my husband snoring!).
Glad your tum is feeling a bit better and that the number of positions you feel comfortable in is slowly increasing. You've got a lot to work through, so I'm sending you lots of love and positive, encouraging vibes. xx

Ha ha, that is funny Piggles love, I always dream I am trying to find a toilet and cannot and wake up desperate to go to the loo!! I am sorry to hear about our friend though, please give her my very best. I am a wriggler in bed which is why I found hospital so damned uncomfortable. Being able to lie on my right side is a Godsend. Yes love I am supposed to go on the 10th only that is to be confirmed. I hope they sort something out for me.
I am glad I am not the only one who has strange dreams Bean love, although I wouldn't wish mine on anyone. There was an old couple I knew when I was a child who were like grandparents to me and I still miss them so much to this day. I dream about them a lot and wake up very distressed. If we get this grant I am going to make sure I get a really good mattress, when you think of how long you are in bed and how important sleep is, it is really worth it. Tummy came back last night after I had eaten, we will see if it does the same tonight. If this goes on it is something else I will have to pester the doctor about lol!! Thank you for the vibes hunni, I am a very lucky lady to have such wonderful friends.

I have had digestion problems off and on, too. Nothing really seems to work. At least mine only last for a period of time, then let up. I can't imagine not getting a break. I remember my MiL taking a prescription pill before she ate at every meal. Not sure what the pill was, but she said it helped with her digestion quite a lot. I hope you can get your tummy under control. Eating is so important, especially when you're trying to lose weight while eating a healthy diet.
When I got my current mattress, I couldn't believe I had waited so long to get it. I rarely sleep through the night, but if I wake, I can get back to sleep. Sleeping well for a few hours at a time is so much better than tossing and turning most of the night, and waking up aching and tired. A bad night of sleep pretty much ruins the next day. I hope you get the grant, so you can get a new mattress that really works for you.

Sorry your tum is bothering you again, Jo. It's definitely no fun to have mobility problems and dodgy digestion at the same time, so I hope it passes soon.
And fingers crossed for that grant. It'll make such a difference to have a bit of comfort to help you get a good night's sleep. Have you had an occupational therapist visit you at home to see if anything else can be improved for you?

It is nasty isn't it Piggles love? It is just that when I need to go too it is so urgent which given my current circumstances, can be a bit stressful. Paul used to suffer with indigestion but that seems to have gone too, talk about a change of life for us both, it is amazing. I had a nice chicken dinner last night with new potatoes, just a small meal and it was lovely but it is all I had all day so I think I am allowed a few potatoes. It is important to eat and I am trying to do it sensibly.
Yes I too hope we get this grant, a comfy bed sounds like heaven!
Thanks Bean hunni, yet it is a bit better today but still not really settled. I just hope it doesn't keep flaring up. The occupational therapist has been and had a chat but needs to come back again to take a couple of things away. Things for pressure sores but now I am up more I don't need them. I think they are due a return visit when we will see if there is anything else that can help.

Glad the occupational therapist has visited, and is returning. I hope the OT can help you get set up for a lifestyle that suits you better. Can the OT get you more comfy chairs, cushions to help, or anything like that? I'm not sure what their role is. I'm not surprised that Paul's indigestion is much better, now that he's not eating and drinking the way he used to. Our bodies can only take so much, and the inability to tolerate food and drink usually comes from pushing our bodies way too far, as he did. It's when we don't push it, and we still have problems, that we need help. I really hope you can find a good balance between the foods you like, the weight you want to lose, and a healthy digestive system

I'm glad the pressure sores have been seen off now you're more active. Being incapacitated by something like a break causes so many other problems that make it really hard to get going again, but you're doing really well.
Your chicken dinner sounds nice, and I think you can enjoy a few potatoes without worrying about it. It's so important we enjoy our food. It sounds like you've made some really positive changes while still doing that and are reaping the rewards.

I don't know when they are returning Piggle love but it should be soon and I will see if there is anything else that will be able to help me. I get a bit confused with roles, there seem to be so many of these bodies it all gets a bit muddling lol! Paul is much better, he has some of his old glow back and is being nicer to me too. He is being quite good with his diet and watching what he is eating. You are right, the body only takes so much and it rebels, he is just lucky that he is all right and came through it.
Pressure sores mostly gone Bean sweetie, just the odd sore bit and I have cream for that. The trouble is with everything going straight through me, the pills aren't working, the pain is bad and I am shattered. Making a telephone appointment with the doctor tomorrow morning as this is getting silly. I will just get weaker at this rate. The chicken dinner was great love, that was the last thing I was able to eat. I have just eaten a banana so I can take my pills but guess what....... Oh well, good days and bad.
Love you both.

Oh dear You really don't need everything going through you. I really hope the doctor can do something for you. The pain may be contributing to your upset stomach, and vice versa. You really need a break. I hope you get one soon It's great that Paul is getting his glow back, and his attitude is improving. You really don't need to be fighting all this on your own, and neither does he. Keeping all digits crossed that you get some real relief, and soon!

That's even more difficult if you have pills you need to take with food but eating is causing you such bother. Do you think they might be contributing to your stomach being irritated? Hard if that is the case, as you need to take them. I hope the doctor can think of something helpful when you speak ho him/her as it makes you feel so drained when you have an upset tum. You need to be increasing your strength so you can move around more and carry on with your recovery. Let us know how you get on, Jo. xx

Thank you Piggles love but my doctor has buggered off for nearly 2 weeks so I am not a happy bunny. Tummy does seem a little more settled at the moment as I have been having proper meals and I think it is helping. What I thought was my breathing appointment on the 10th is the fracture clinic so we are getting in a bit of a muddle. Oh well, I will have to have a good read through my hospital notes, that will make for some good reading lol! Yes Paul is much better thank you, I am so pleased to say.
Thank you Bean hunni, I have an appointment to speak to my doctor on the 15th, a joke isn't it? I think it could have been the meds but you watch now, I will go the other way. I have had two good meals for the past couple of days and I feel more settled in myself since then, so I don't know if it is anything to do with it. I will let you know how I get on love.

Maybe eating more will help if you can manage it. You can lose your appetite when you have an upset stomach, but if you can escape from the cycle and dilute the potential irritating factor of the medications, perhaps that will calm things down. I hope so anyway.
The 15th is way too long to speak to your doctor though - isn't there anyone else you could speak to or would you rather wait for someone who knows you? It's just ridiculous to leave someone that long when they've got in touch because they're having problems.
Hope you find your breathing appointment in your extensive collection of letters and notes - each thing you can get sorted leads you closer to feeling better. xx
