We got our flu and COVID shots in early Fall, so we should be okay. None of the shots/boosters works much more than 6 months, so we should probably investigate getting flu and COVID updates in a couple of months.
At least you've gotten what is available, Baz. That's all any of us can do.

I don't think I could do a low-carb diet

You'd be surprised, and we don't do a no carb diet, just far less than we used to eat. Order a burger in a take out restaurant, we got the burger, fries and a drink. The burger bun is carbs, and since it's white bread, pretty useless carbs. The fries are carbs and starch. Eat one, not both. It's more like that. We still eat carbs, but try to keep the amount down. We also don't eat much saturated fat, using plant-based fats like olive or avocado oil instead of butter. That's just the Mediterranean approach using oils in place of butter. We don't eliminate butter, just use it more for taste in certain recipes, rather than for everything.
Hubby is borderline diabetic, so we have to keep the white/high carb foods to a minimum, anyway. It's just easier to have low carb foods in the house more than high carb foods, so we don't have to put a lot of thought into what we eat.

Low carb isn't for me (I tried one for a health condition some time ago). I don't enjoy eating that way, found it antisocial (in terms of needing to make myself something different to the family) and found it hard to get the calories I needed without the high fat content bugging my gut (and I don't usually have a problem with fats at the levels I'd usually eat them, which isn't scant). I didn't feel any better for it than from just eating a generally healthy diet either. I mainly stick to wholegrains, don't really eat processed/ fast foods (as I don't like them) and don't eat a lot of added sugars, but generally focus on what I want to include in my diet (like loads of fresh veg) than cutting things out.

That's the majority of our diets, too. We eat a small amount of meat, small amount of starchy carb like potato or pasta, and a large amount of veggies. Probably 50% veg, 50% the rest of it.
We tried seemingly endless low carb versions of pasta, and they are not the same. I've heard chefs rave about how the low/no carb pasta is just as good, can't tell the difference from pasta. Not the case, unless there are some miracle pastas we don't get in any of our markets. I've also tried making pasta from almond flour, casava, etc., and it's totally not the same. Serving size is the only way to reduce the intake of really tasty carbs.

Have you tried courgetti spaghetti (spiralised zucchini)? I had it once (lightly stir fried) and it was okay, but it's not as filling as pasta. For those who do need to restrict carbs, a mix of real spaghetti and courgetti spaghetti could work well though?

Yes, we have a spiralizer and have made it fresh at home. It's great with a little extra virgin olive oil, salt and pepper. I don't care for it or spaghetti squash with tomato sauce, and that's hubby's favorite. I haven't tried spaghetti squash with EVOO, salt and pepper, and wonder if that would be an option. Hubby hasn't shown much interest in trying spaghetti squash again. I'll watch for them to be on sale(not sure that every happens).
I think the difference is fake pasta that's trying to replace real pasta, versus spiralized squashes that don't pretend to be pasta. The latter seems to work better for us. I also like fresh food when I can get it, which helps.

I now what you mean. I much prefer foods that are naturally vegetarian rather than vegetarian versions of products that tend to be meaty - real food all the way!

I do want to make tofu bacon. It's just something I want to try making. If I like it, I'll probably make more of it. It would be a great alternative to meat bacon for sandwiches. I guess that would make a BLT a TLT, lol

Let me know how you get on with that - sounds interesting!

Will do. I have the Tofu. I just have to arrange my time to press it, then slice it into bacon slices and marinate them. It would be nice to use up that Tofu!

I was taking painkillers again for my abdominal pain recently and noticed that the pain only hits in the last two hours of work, so I tried not taking them to see if they were helping. Yes, they were definitely helping! The pain kicked in after an hour and was stronger than usual, so tomorrow I go back to taking an Advil each morning. I could still work through the pain, but with everything else that's going on I don't see a need to add to my suffering.

Sorry you still need them, but glad they're doing their job and making you more comfortable.

That's too bad, but if the Advil works, do it. You won't do your body any harm just taking them once a day, and as you said, that's just not something you need right now <3

I can't take Advil because my surgery is coming up, so I stopped a few days ago. I think I really don't need it anymore until AFTER the surgery again until that pain heals. That will be nice not having to worry about that anymore. Also, a co-worker got temporarily transferred to another building and caught covid there! I should be safe, as I haven't seen him since the transfer, but I might start wearing a mask to work again for a while. I did get my vaccination last week, so steps have already been taken.

Worth wearing the mask to not get COVID before your op, or risk getting it until you're completely healed. Even though the op won't compromise your immune system, every time the body is attacked, as with surgery, the body puts all its defenses there, and leaves other areas unprotected. Mask is just a good preventive measure for a while, especially if you don't want to miss work because of COVID.
We still have windows open, and I sleep with a window at least cracked open, so I know I get a lot of fresh air. That won't stop me from getting COVID, but we don't pollute the air in the house, then breathe it. We do freshen the air. Not sure how much longer we'll be able to do that. We have the HVAC off, but it will get cold enough to need it back on. We're putting that off for as long as possible.

Hope you can steer clear of covid, Baz, you've waited long enough for this surgery.
Only older and vulnerable people are getting a booster vaccine over here. After it all being quiet for many months, lots of people we know have been testing positive in the last couple of weeks, so I reckon it's probably only a matter of time before I have my third dance with it!

The vaccine is available to everyone, though if there's a run on the vaccine, the government puts age restrictions on it. We're old, so we qualify, anyway

With the flu jab, vulnerable groups of people get it free, but anyone can pay to have one privately (£15-20). But with the covid jabs, you can only get them if you're in certain groups.
Do you know what uptake of the covid vaccine is generally like there, and also among different groups (ages, income brackets etc)?

The government is paying for the COVID vaccine, so I don't know if all groups are getting it, or just those most at risk. We're in the most at risk group because of our age, so we shouldn't have to pay for it. The flu vaccine is free, too. I have no idea how much longer that will continue. Every time the republicans don't get their way, they try to close down the government and hurt as many people as possible to make the democrats down what the republicans want them to do. The orange-topped dirt bag got what he wanted. He totally divided the country. Bipartisanship is practically a thing of the past
