I've noticed that my pigs are more at home when they've got floor time. When they're out their cage, they appear more active, more inquisitive and generally less tense (resting for a while and enjoying the underfloor heating) even though they're in what I'd class as a more vulnerable place.
One big difference is the floor covering. In their cage they've got fleece. At floor time I'm using an old sheet that was used to keep us cool in summer. It's fabric, a little hard, is cool to touch, and maybe better underfoot. The only downside is that it absorbs pee.
I'm thinking that the fleece is actually too warm and soft underfoot and that they don't like it very much. It doesn't encourage them to be active. They just prefer to lounge around.
Any thoughts?

We rarely buy toys (we just use cardboard tubes stuffed with hay and other cardboard creations!) but do buy these balls as our lot all love them - the buns always do too! The rattan ball at the top seems to be most satisfying to destroy! They love throwing them around with their teeth too, it's funny to watch. As they get destroyed, we poke bits of hay in or hide a few veg in to keep them busy. The more complicated of the cardboard ball designs on this page works well too as you can shove different hays, grasses and veg in it. Food is a good motivator to start tossing things around (and it keeps the kids quiet for a while making the balls!). These cardboard balls are great.

Sea food doesn't start with a B - have you not woken up properly yet?! yeah, you're right! I'd forgotten all about the rules Sorry I posted the same thing twice. I got an error message so I thought it hadn't posted. Now I can't delete one post. The connection is a little strange tonight. Brussel sprouts
