Oh Bean love, aren't we horrid LOL? YES!!! I'm going to contact proboards and ask if there's an option to tag members with little devices that can give small electric shocks (just a friendly buzz, honest!) and every time I read a post that offends me, I'll just press my button and deliver a shock. Might rig them all together so you all get shocked each time one of you is naughty - stop you ganging up on me. They'll do that for me, won't they?!

Lol! Bean, I'm on your side on this one! I think any words containing the letters C H R S T M A should be banned until mid-November!!! Or at the very least until after Halloween for gosh sakes

Post Thanksgiving is my view - not that this rabble ever pay any attention to my wishes! (Also, as a Brit where we don't celebrate Thanksgiving, it is of course just a delaying tactic!)
Anyway, it's good to know I have an ally cookie72 - a bit of moral support on the darker days when members are being naughty will be very welcome!

I totally agree with post Thanksgiving, but retail doesn't. The catalogs are already arriving, in some cases buying early is the only to not have items sold out or on back order. We did the shopping for granddaughter back in August with the back to school sales. We went with a coloring theme, and all of those items were on great sales. Did all her shopping at Target before Thanksgiving, last year, and after thanksgiving Target was majorly hacked. So glad we weren't shopping then! Also a lot of fund raisers need to be held now, if they are going to raise enough in time to buy gifts. Most organizations have shopping days for the needy, well in advance of the holiday. Sorry Treen, but as much as I think decorations before Halloween are overdoing it, the retail world wants to make the shopping season as long and profitable as possible. We're overruled. Oh, and I mean US thanksgiving, not Canadian Maybe retail goes by Canadian holidays

Lol! Getting mine slapped, too We always put the up the day after Thanksgiving. It gets too cold and snowy, closer to the holiday. We have to have them down by a certain time, so we always do that on New Years Day. Those are also times when hubby is off work to do the putting up and taking down. I love the lights.

You'll also be delighted to hear that my kids' school have started a choir club this term. First session last week and guess what they're learning? About 20 ruddy Christmas songs! They plan to go round care homes and shopping centres performing so apparently need to start now to be polished but the quality of their performance is of no consolation to me when I have the two of them constantly dipping in to Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer and Jingle Bells in flipping October!!!

I don't mind the decorations at all, I like them in fact. And I understand putting them up before it gets too cold outside. My grievance is with the retail world. The whole black friday thing...outside the US it may be different, but here, the day after Thanksgiving is called black friday...the day that all the retailers start their big holiday sales. It used to be that, early the day after Thanksgiving, all the stores open very early and you'll have hundreds of people lining up outside the stores waiting to rush inside to get the sale items. Well, the last couple years here, most of the major retailers started doing their 'black friday' sales on Thanksgiving night. So that means the store employees don't get to have the day off to celebrate the holiday with their families, instead they have to go into work. That really irritates me...the whole concept that one day we are celebrating a holiday that says we're thankful for what we have...and the next day we are trampling over people to buy cheap stuff that we really don't need. A couple years ago here, a person was killed because he was trampled by the crowd rushing into a walmart store, and most of the people shown on the news report just kept walking by the poor soul like they didn't even care! That's mostly what irritates me about the whole chrsms thing...that the spirit of what it's supposed to be has been lost. Ok, on a lighter note, it was a beautiful day here today! I went with a few friends to a petting zoo and we got to meet an alpaca, a baby kangaroo (he was soooo soft) and a baby deer and some baby goats. It was a really fun day

Aww that sounds lovely!
I don't think any of us like the retail frenzy of Christmas, it is way too much isn't it. When people get hurt like that lady and many have other family holidays like Thanksgiving ruined for profit margins, you know things have gone wrong somewhere. Not to mention the countless people who get in to debt getting dragged into Christmas being some big blowout regardless of whether it's within your means.
There are many of us who just keep it simple and think of it as a time to spend with family and friends, pretty up their houses and enjoy some good festive food and cheer. But lots more who just buy, buy, buy! I've seen kids get so many presents they barely get round to opening them all, let alone playing with them.
It's absolutely chucking it down today so glad I got my lawn mowed!

I totally agree about the retail frenzy. I worked retail when daughter was young, and the extended hours between Thanksgiving and Christmas were exhausting, and I basically worked around the clock for a month. But we had all of Thanksgiving Day off, and all stores closed around 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Now, we no longer have any real family time We hit financial rock bottom a while back, and while we're okay now, we really reduced the holidays to getting together as a family. We don't care if we do holiday breakfast, lunch or dinner, as long as we get together for even a short time. We do gifts for granddaughter, and usually get ourselves a joint gift. Daughter works retail, so no chance to plan in advance. Hubby and I have found great ways to fill our holiday time, so we're not sitting around being bored or lonely without family around Reducing our expectations, and simplifying the process made a huge difference. No more retail craziness, huge meals, etc

I feel really sorry for people in retail at that time of year, there is no christmas spirit, just money money money. All the shops are open all over the christmas period, giving many no chance to enjoy it at all. Another thing, the easter eggs are in the shops in January.

I remember as a kid thinking each holiday was so special. I couldn't wait to look for Easter eggs, get the tree set up and see the pressies, wear my pillow case with eye holes cut out to go trick or treating, etc. I also remember the poppies and listening to a student recite "In Flanders Field Where Poppies Grown." I remember going to the cemetery with my mother to put flowers on the graves on Memorial Day, and putting out red, white and blue bunting for 4th of July. Fireworks displays were a chance to meet up with friends. Now, it's all commercial or just a reason to get a day off from work, and I find that really sad. I totally agree, Jo, that the point the holidays is getting lost.
