Excellent news about the blood tests. She'll get over being flea powdered, and be happy not to have fleas!

!t really must be hot here tonight - Silvie is sprawled on my bed instead of my lap! My bedroom is the coolest room in the house in the evening. At least it means I can use the laptop for a change!

They do find this hot weather unpleaant. My piggies have gone to sleep, the kitties are under bush outside and our bunny if we had one, would be spread out on the vinyl floor. I do feel for them because this heat makes me naggy too (Paul says there is no change there then -cheeky twaddle LOL).

Silvie has given me a bit of a scare this evening! I don't usually let her out in the dark but when I got home this evening, she was wailing at the door so I relented. She came back in about ten minutes later, clearly having had a bust up with someone - clumps of fur hanging out all over. She looked uncomfortable and miaowing in a kind of whingey, crying way, didn't seem to know what to do with herself, big wide eyes and limping a bit.
I was quite worried about her but it was hers and my teatimes and she didn't have any trouble wolfing down her dinner and a pinch of my cheese. I gave her a maximum dose of Metacam instead of the usual maintenance dose. After her dinner, she usually comes and sits on my lap but she seemed barely able to jump up, so I lifted her up. She sat down and purred loudly but wouldn't stop twitching her tail. After half an hour, she jumped down gingerly, had a short wander and licked my plate and jumped back up by herself.
So, apart from a bit of a sore front leg (her arthritis makes it easy for her to get that sort of minor injury), I conclude that its largely a case of being properly shaken up and a good dose of wounded pride! I'll let her sleep with me tonight, just to be sure she's ok.

Glad she wasn't hurt too badly. I hope she learned a lesson, and won't go out after dark again!

Her pride and dignity were hurt much more than anything else! Needless to say, she lasted an hour in bed with me that night before she started poking me in the face and I had to shut her out! Her arthritis always means she starts to feel a little bit sorry for herself as soon as it starts to get properly colder, and it has here this past week. So the limping thing's probably a combination of the fight and the cold. I'll keep giving her extra Metacam for a few days and she'll be fine I'm being stingy and holding off putting the heating on - at least until October. My dad never put the heating on until October when I was young - always just told us to put another jumper on! And that has kinda stuck with me. But I could always be persuaded, if it's for Silvie's or the pigs' benefit...!

I am glad she is all right love. I have had piggies on the bed with me in the past and it is lovely when you wake up and they are snuggled up.

My father worked for the electric company, so we always froze in the winter and boiled in the summer! There was a US TV commercial about some brand of whole house a/c, with the guy holding open his front door and saying "yes, Dad, I am cooling the whole outdoors." Ooh, that hit home!!! I also now have UV light bulbs in at least one lamp per room, and on dark, gloomy days, leave the lights on when I'm not in the room.

She just knows exactly how to make me feel sorry for her and has me wrapped round her wee paw! My parents were brought up during wartime and rationing. Think it lived with the for a long time. I can remember getting dressed in the airing cupboard when I was young on occasion because the rest of the house was so cold! Think its rubbed off on me a bit too though! My brother's cat Koko, a big gorgeous light brown Burmese fella, has been missing for a week. Just got news that he is now home - fantastic

The limp has persisted and it looked noticeably worse last night so I gave in and took her to the vet this morning. The answer was as I expected, an aggravation of her arthritis. So I've to maintain a maximum dose of Metacam. And - and here's where I'm going to be in serious trouble! - I've got some Tramadol capsules to give her. Can't open them up and put it in her food because they taste so bad apparently - has to be the whole capsules. And they're twice a day. And they're huge!
This is going to be interesting. All tips on how to do this on my own and without further disturbing her sore leg very gratefully received!

If they can actually be swallowed, being that huge, I suggest you wrap her as a burrito, lie her on her back in the crook of your arm, and just force it down so she has to swallow it. I would be way too afraid of her choking to do it, but that's from your description of the pill size! Not sure why the pills would be that big?
Also try emptying the capsule into something overpoweringly sweet, like pineapple juice or orange/pineapple, and syringe feeding? I think that would be my first choice, but that's also because of my arthritic hands not forcing pills too well. Good luck!!! Please let me know what method finally works for you!

Despite all my trepidation, I just buried the capsule in a lump of her normal dinner and she ate it fine! I did try one of things that fires pills into their mouth, but failed dismally! They are human drugs so are human sized capsules, like you get for paracetamol or ibuprofen or something. They're too big for Silvie though so the vet had to empty each one out, put half back in and put the other half in an empty capsule case. So capsules ate the same size but they've each only hot half a dose in!
Anyway, she has not reacted well to tje drug after two doses - wide eyes, dilated pupils, slinking around, tail between her legs, appears very slightly confused and nervy, she's a bit twitch - and she doesn't want to sit on my lap beside a warm radiator, which is most abnormal! I phoned the vet as I was anxious and they agreed that this reaction wasn't good. I've to go up and collect something different later on.
Why does this stuff always happen just before I go away?! Supposed to be going away on Monday. Hope she fares better with the new drug!

Flipping hippos! That's a terrible reaction! Glad the vet agreed to try something else. I really hope you get it sorted before the trip.
I never heard of something that shoots the pill into their mouths. Doesn't sound like something I'd want to use on my self, so not really surprised it didn't work on her. Glad you found a way to get her to take the capsule, even if the capsule turned out not to be good for her. Ugh!
What would happen if she didn't get that med until you return from your trip?

Not starting the new one until I get back is certainly an option. Another one is simply not to go! Vet says I can start the new drug tonight. I'm more inclined to wait until tomorrow, when she'll hopefully have come down from the tramadol. I'll want to know the tramadol and her bad reaction to it have gone before I start anything new and before I go away. I also don't want to start anything new before I go in case she reacts badly again - I want to be here for her. Some tough decisions which will have to wait until tomorrow when I see how she is.
Always at weekends too!

Never fails, and around here, only animal hospitals are open on weekends. They usually have a dog/cat person on duty, but not a guinea pig person.

I am pleased to say the the real Silvie is starting to return Still a long way from 100% but definitely moving in the right direction. She still doesn't seem to be able to relax fully, still twitching occasionally but she can now close her eyes and can rest. Eyes are still not right but better than they were. Never have I been so pleased to have her climb all over me and poke me in the face in the middle of the night causing me to have to shut her downstairs and then to hear her yowling early in the morning!

Excellent news! It is funny how much we miss the things we often complain about the most. But they are signs of a happy, healthy pet, and no matter how irritating, we appreciate that!
