I never heard of something that shoots the pill into their mouths. Doesn't sound like something I'd want to use on my self, so not really surprised it didn't work on her. Glad you found a way to get her to take the capsule, even if the capsule turned out not to be good for her. Ugh! Not sure if it's the same thing but I have a plunger that helps you get the tablets in. Heidi and Huxley are horrendously difficult at getting tablets into. My vet gave me the plunger. It looks a bit like a syringe but on the end it has two curved grips instead of a needle. The grips hold the tablet and lets you get it into the side of the mouth, behind the teeth. Then you just push the plunger down and it pushes the tablet off the grips and into the back of the mouth. Sometimes it helps but hubby pretty good at getting meds in them so generally I wait until he's home and he can dose them. I've never tried the little treat pushes but heard they are good. I am pleased to say the the real Silvie is starting to return Still a long way from 100% but definitely moving in the right direction. She still doesn't seem to be able to relax fully, still twitching occasionally but she can now close her eyes and can rest. Eyes are still not right but better than they were. Never have I been so pleased to have her climb all over me and poke me in the face in the middle of the night causing me to have to shut her downstairs and then to hear her yowling early in the morning! Glad to hear she's improving.

I Googled guinea pig pill dispenser, and got this: www.wag.com/cat/p/lixit-pill-popper-122058This may be what Newpig meant. It is sized for cats, so perhaps seeing if there's one sized for kittens would be better. I used kitten-sized masks for Dallas when he needed t hem for his inhaler, and they seemed to fit pretty well. Cat sized ones were too big.

This looks great, kitties are notoriously difficult to administer to.

Thanks for all your support in a pretty scarey time. Now I'm back from my wee holiday, I'm pleased to say that Silvie is fully recovered form her Tramadol ordeal!
The vet gave me Vetergesic as an alternative to the Tramadol, whioch I left until I returned to try. As expected, I failed dismally at that! It is a liquid and supposed to be syringed into her mouth onto her gums to be absorbed. So no use giving with food. Epic fail.
However, I was at the vets yesterday with the pigs for a check up and I took the opportunity to ask her about Silvie. She said that the Vetergesic can be given with food, it just won't have as much effect that way as it won't spend enough time in contact with the skin inside the mout to be absorbed. I'll try that tonight. She also gave me some prescription diet to try which might help - Hills Science Plan j/d. Looks and smells vile but she seems to like it! So I'll give that a shot.
I also asked the vet what would happen if the drugs didn't work and we took the next step of X-raying to see what was in there. She said that the likelihood is that they'd find something which they couldn't or wouldn't deal with surgically anyway. I think she was happy with my thoughts that I doidn't think the injury was serious enough to warrant taking that next step at the moment. We can try the Vetergsic on her food to see haw that works and we can try the prescription diet. Both nice easy things which don't distress her or me (just my wallet...). Silvie will be back to the vet for her booster around Christmas time so I can discuss things again with he vet then.

I was at a lovely Christmas lunch with my colleagues on Wednesday and one of them had brought some of those thin glowsticks that you wrap round your wrists to make bracelets. I brought a couple home with me.
Yesterday evening, whilst I was feeding the pigs, Silvie started bolting round the house, shaking her head, trying to get something out of her mouth and frothing at the mouth. I'd seen her chasing one of the glowsticks immediately before and I couldn't see it so I assumed she'd swallowed it.
So, off to the vets yet again at a dash, for yet another X-ray (shed already been in twice this week - once to see the special orthopaedic vet and once for scans and X-days on her dodgy elbow!). Turns out she hadn't swallowed it, just bitten it. Her teeth were flourescent! Vet phoned the poison people and they confirmed that it really wasn't toxic, just really really disgusting tasting, hence all the mouth frothing. What a huge relief!
So, I am now feeling mightily ashamed of myself for allowing this to happen and very relieved that Silvie is fine and none the worse for it. Took me a while lady night before I could properly peel myself off the ceiling but Silvie was very soon nicely relaxing on my lap beside the radiator!

I remember when the dog licked a toad. He was doing everything to get rid of that taste. Just really glad Silvie is okay, and that stuff isn't toxic. Good of you to post so others will know not to leave those around where cats can get them. Hugs

Thanks 3piggles Not having an easy time with Silvie at the moment. After her orthopaedic consultations, she was back in last week to get a steroid jag in her dodgy elbow. Not yet convinced that its had much effect but I'm prepared to give it time. We've to go back and see the special vet in January for him to see how she's doing. A couple of days before Christmas Silvie started sneezing. She's had proper flu before so I didn't think too much of it and assumed it would pass (cats who have had flu are likely to carry the virus and have occasional relapses). However, the sneezing was still there yesterday and not improving, so I started reading online about flu and read that cortico-steroids can reduce immunity which would make it easier for her to get a flu relapse. Going to speak to the vets this morning to see if there's anything we can do to help her.

Sorry that Silvie is a bit under the weather - hope her sneezing doesn't in to anything more worrying, and that the vets can reassure you. Vet phoned the poison people and they confirmed that it really wasn't toxic, just really really disgusting tasting. Glad Silvie was okay, and also that the stuff in those things isn't toxic as the kids were given some that leaked earlier in the year! What the jiggins is in it?!

Poor Silvie. She's in a bad place with the meds, isn't she! I hope the vet has a solution. Did the vet remember that she had the flu? Hugs to you both

I phoned the vets this morning and they wanted me to bring her in. Vet checked her over, noted that it was her right nostril she was having issues with and checked her eyes. Nothing serious but she gave Silvie an antibiotic jag to make sire it doesn't turn into something. She noted that the steroids dose Silvie had wasn't a big one but was long-acting, so it shouldn't have a significant effect on her immune system. The ABs are just to giver her a boost if she needs it. I feel a bit happier now the vet has seen her.
Vet suggested some steam inhalation - then we both laughed! Think the best I can do is shut her in the bathroom with me when I'm running the bath and can use a wee spot of eucalyptus oil. Not sure how she'll like that but I can try!

Glad the vet didn't think it was serious! I've found the steam only lasts as long as there is steam, but if you use a humidifier to just put moisture into the air, that is constant. If you have big radiators, you can just put a pot of water on the radiator, the heat helps the water evaporate a bit faster. Much below 40% humidity, the pigs start scratching and my sinuses get really dry. Also unlike the steam, humidifiers cost very little to run. I hope she gets unclogged soon

She's certainly not 100% yet but Silvie is definitely feeling batter - she's back to yowling at me before 7am!
