I live far from Ireland, so I won't be able to help you. I just want to say that I really feel for you. My worst nightmare is having to give up my pets, so I totally understand that you're heart broken. You're dong what's best for the bunnies though, so I really hope you find them a good home.

I got my first guinea pig at a pet store and my second one from an animal shelter. I didn't know better, but I don't think I will ever support the breeding the pet stores do again - especially now after reading what 3piggles wrote. That's very disturbing. I paid $30 CAD for each of mine, so $50 sounds high. I know it's different if you live in a rural area, but here lots of people want to give away or sell their guinea pigs for cheap in the local classified ads. It breaks my heart when I see people giving up their pets because the don't have time or something like that and then you read that the animal is only a few months old. It makes me mad when people get a pet without considering the work and money it takes to have a pet. Anyway, that was just a rant. I hope you find a nice little friend for Mary :-)

Mary sure is cute. The name still cracks me up :-) I had a male guinea pig for a few months and then I decided that he needed a friend. Best thing I ever did for him. There are a lot of people on here that knows a lot about pairing up guinea pigs, so I'm sure you'll get lots of help with that question. I lucked out and found a spayed female at the animal shelter and they loved each other from the very beginning. As far as I know, it can be problematic to pair up two males, but it's not impossible. How old is Mary? I believe you'll have to get one that's not that same age as Mary, because if they go through puperty at the same time, it can get nasty. You could also get Mary fixed and then get a female. It seems like there's usually less problems with pairing a male and a female than two males. He difinitely needs a friend though. The cage thing, I'm not sure about. The bigger the better, I think and I believe you need a bigger cage for two males than any other combination, because of territorial issues. Have you looked into the C&C cages which you can build yourself? I have one for my pigges as kind of a play area and then I have their regular cage, that I can close, so my cats don't bother them. I hope somebody else here will be able to get you advice as well, because a lot of the Wheekers people have a lot of experience to share with the rest of us :-)

He is a very handsome little guy. There's lot of good threads on how to care for your guinea pigs on Wheekers, but if you have any questions, just ask. People are very helpful here :-)

I don't know if guinea pigs are really supposed to wear harnesses. Maybe somebody else can answer that. Is it possible to make a small enclosure for him? Maybe you can make some kind of mini fence, so he can't get out and then he can explore without being on a harness. Just don't leave him alone or you'll need a roof on the enclosure as well.

I would just give him some cardboard boxes to run through. Cut a couple of holes in them, so he can run through them, chew on them, sleep in them etc. My piggies love that kind of stuff....and it's free!! I just made a tunnel out of a used milk carton (2L) and cut off the ends. They seem to like running through that as well. I have some small wood things hanging, but they are not too interested in that. You can also make tents for him. Just use an old towel or some fleece. I hang it from the edge of the cage or from the top and they like hiding in there or again running through it.

Welcome to Wheekers. What an adorable little guy Mary is :-) It sounds like the two of you were meant to meet, so it's really great that you can now give him the love and attention his previous owners couldn't.

My guinea pig makes the purring sound too, but I think there's a happy purr and then another one when he is freaked out. He also seems to make it when I watch something on my iPad with sound. For some reason he hates any kind of sound coming from the iPad.

I give mine a mix of all kinds of vegetables. They get green leaf lettuce (romaine for example), green, red, orange and yellow peppers, carrots, green beans, cucumber, zucchini, celery, celery root, snow peas, different types of squash (butternut, spaghetti etc), sweet potato, cilantro, mint, dill, endive, spinach (not much), broccoli. I have also given them a liitle bit of corn on the cob and sometimes a cherry tomato. They don't get a lot of fruit, but sometimes as a treat, I give them a small piece of apple, orange, water melon or maybe pear. I have also looked at the chart and it seems difficult to find something they can have every day. I just give them a little bit of several different things and I hope that's ok.

You might be right. It seems to be more complicated than just boiling it, so maybe a water filter would be better.

I'm so sorry to hear about Alan. You did everything you could for the little guy.
It's very interesting about the tap water. I will definitely consider boiling their water first now. Thank you.

My guinea pig Melvin was a little bit of a picky eater too until I got him a friend (Mila). I don't know if they get a little competitive or what, but it seems like they both eat pretty much everything now. Peppers are not their favorite either, but they do eat them. They love dill. I give them all kinds of things like zucchini, squash (spaghetti, butternut etc.), green beans, celery, celery root, carrot, cucumber, sweet potato, mint leaves, cilantro, green leaf lettuce, spinach (not that often), snow peas, broccoli etc. I don't give them a lot of fruit, because they are high in sugar, but sometimes they get apple, orange, pear, strawberry, watermelon or something else as a little treat. I think it's fun to look for new things for them and sometimes I see something at the grocery store and I have to google it right there, to see if it's safe for guinea pigs. It's always exciting to see their little faces when you show them something new :-)

I give my piggies unlimited hay and basically the same for pellets. They don't seem to over eat. I give them fresh vegetables every morning when I get up and again before I go to bed. They don't get a lot of fruit - sometimes a little piece of apple or orange, or watermelon in the summer.

My guinea pigs love card board boxes. They sleep in them, chew on them, flip them over, run through them. etc. It's an excellent toy and cheap too
